Baldrick actor Sir Tony Robinson says a cunning plan for Britain to combat climate change with turnips is “fascinating”.
The root vegetable, adored by Tony’s character in Blackadder, is set to become a vital tool in the battle against global warming due to its ability to thrive and adapt in all conditions. The actor, who played Blackadder’s manservant for 17 years, was stunned to learn of his character’s favourite grub’s importance in a podcast chat with food historian Rebecca Earle.
Rebecca told Tony’s Cunningcast podcast the veg would defy rising temperatures and be sustainable for years to come. “Think of them as a locally grown, very adaptable, climate-friendly food source,” she said.

Tony, 77, whose character was famous for turnip gags along with a host of “cunning plans’, said her revelation about the veg was “absolutely fascinating”.
It comes after Blackadder creator Ben Elton admits he hasn’t watched the beloved sitcom or any of his old shows as he can’t help but notice the “flaws” in them. The television writer revealed he hasn’t watched the iconic comedy shows since they first aired decades ago.
But despite the issues he sees in them, Ben said he has never released anything he didn’t think “was brilliant”. Speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X, Ben, 64, admitted: “I don’t watch my shows.
“I haven’t watched Auntie or an Adder or a Young Ones or anything, really, since they came out. I love that other people like to watch. But all I can see is the flaws.
He continued: “I’ve thought, ‘I remember the fight over that line, and ‘we were right’ and all you ever do – and I’m sure it’s the same as anyone who looks back at a piece of work they’ve done – all they can think of is the bit that they weren’t happy with. And that’s the same still after 40 years.”
Chris pointed out that Ben is only in The Young Ones “for 10 seconds or whatever” – but Ben still wasn’t keen. “I’m the writer,” he said. “What concerns me is the words. I mean, firstly, I would never watch myself perform.
