Chappell Roan caused a stir at the MTV Video Music Awards as she hit back at a man who was heard saying: “Shut the f*** up.”
The row broke out on the black carpet at the glitzy event in New York, as Chappell stopped for a moment to let an assistant help her to arrange her floaty black dress and green cloak. She had turned away from the cameras and a man, thought to be a photographer, was heard uttering the insult.
Whirling around, the Hot To Go! star pointed at the offender as she snapped back: “YOU shut the f*** up!” Her comeback stunned onlookers, with a few heard exclaiming as she put the pap in his place.

Chappell, 26, later talked to Entertainment Tonight about yelling back, saying that being on the black carpet could be “horrifying”. “This is quite overwhelming and quite scary,” she said.
“I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying. And I yelled back. I yelled back! You don’t get to yell at me like that!”
Fans were impressed by the way the US star stood up for herself, with many posting messages on X applauding her. “Get him girl!!” wrote one, as another remarked: “Glad to see her defending herself.”
“Finally a celebrity standing up for herself,” said someone else, as others posted: “Love her.” “I just want to frame this video,” said another fan.
Chappell recently posted a long message on Instagram in which she emphasised how important it was for her to have some “boundaries”. “For the past 10 years I’ve been going nonstop to build my project, and it’s come to the point that I need to draw lines and set boundaries,” she wrote.
“I want to be an artist for a very, very long time. I’ve been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions, and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you s***.”
She went on: “I chose this career path because I love music and art and honouring my inner child. I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it.”
