Coronation Street legend quits soap nearly 40 years after debut with storyline in chaos

Coronation Street icon Sean Wilson has dramatically left the ITV soap.

The 59-year-old actor, who first appeared on the cobbles in 1985, had been due to return to Weatherfield to bid farewell to his former on-screen bride Gail Platt. Helen Worthy announced she was leaving Corrie after five decades earlier this year.

Sean had been expected to be a part of Gail’s emotional exit this Christmas and reportedly had already shot scenes. But now it’s believed soap bosses have been forced to rewrite her final storyline as Sean has left Corrie.

ITV have confirmed Sean will not return to the soap as planned. A Corrie spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”

It’s claimed the cast is gutted that Sean won’t be part of her farewell scenes, with a source claiming: “It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie.

“Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set. He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head office, and later it filtered out he wouldn’t be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation offered.”

The insider added to The Sun: “Clearly it’s a major blow for bosses who must now find a new magical and happy ending for Helen – but they are confident they’ll pull it out of the bag, and give viewers something wonderful.”

Martin was just 16 when he made his Corrie debut, played by 20-year-old Sean. Sean was Martin until 2005 when he initially left, but returned in March 2018 for a brief stint.

Sean had previously shared his excitement about returning to Corrie. He said: “It was great to be invited back to Coronation St again, to contribute to Helen’s exit story. We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline.

“Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and in a way, I’ll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family. It’s just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe.”
