Corrie set for ‘cast cull’ as new producer takes over – and fans have list of demands

Coronation Street fans are predicting a “cast cull” now that new producer Kate Brooks is on the scene.

Emmerdale producer Kate has made the switch over to the cobbles of Weatherfield, leaving behind her co-star wife Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa Woodfield in the Dales. She’s replacing Iain MacLeod in the role after his promotion to Executive Producer for Continuing Drama at ITV.

And fans already have a list of demands they’d like to see implemented under Kate’s rule. Over on X, the Conversation Street podcast asked listeners: “Which changes would you like Kate Brooks to make to #Corrie? Tweet your ideas below!”

Fans were quick to oblige, with one writing: “Reduce the cast, which includes killing off Sean, and Ed Bailey gets an overseas opportunity so he packs his bags after Aggie calls time on their marriage.” Another said: “Cast cut. Too many characters. It needs to get back to being a kitchen sink drama based on Mancunian working class families. It feels too shiny and quite frankly fake.”

Another fan added: “Think we’re due a big disaster on the street. Maybe not as big as the tram crash but one that’ll get soap fans talking.” While someone else agreed: “Cull 25-30 characters. Fewer storylines and more concentration on small day to day dramas and relationships!”

While another eagle-eyed viewer said: “Rather than introducing new characters all the time, focus on the existing ones. Cull the existing characters. Focus on character driven storylines, not just storylines to raise awareness! Also, give us a few episodes where we don’t have to have a disclaimer before it!”

Other fans had different asks, including more focus on the older characters like Roy, Ken and Mary. One fan said: “Less storylines about the kids – there’s been times lately when Corrie felt like Grange Hill. I realise all ages have to be catered for but level it out a bit more.”

“I’m happy having storylines about the younger characters, but I’d like some of the older characters to get some focus and stop being treated as a joke such as Steve, Mary, Brian, Sally, Kevin etc,” somebody else posted.

It comes after Kate officially announced she’ll be joining the cobbles, confirming: “I’ve had a wonderful time working on Emmerdale and I feel immensely proud to be part of a team that has achieved such great success over the past eight years.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time on the show, and I’ve had the privilege of working with such a hugely talented and hard-working bunch of people, who also happen to be the loveliest, too. Both professionally and personally, Emmerdale has given me so much more than I ever could have imagined, and for that I shall be eternally grateful. Thanks Emmerdale, it’s been an absolute pleasure.”
