Corrie star worked as ‘singing telegram’ to humiliate people in sexy outfit

Coronation Street star Helen Lederer opened up about her strangest job experience.

The star revealed she had once been a “singing telegram” and was paid for pieing people in the face with foam. This was during her early stand-up days but she still needed to pay the bills.

Helen, now 69, spoke about her early career exclusively to the Daily Star as she promoted her new memoir titled I’m Not Bitter. She told us: “I have been a singing telegram, that’s in the book. It was in the early days when I was a stand up but it was money in the hands.

“I had to go to a pub, get a paper plate, put shaving foam on it, all whilst wearing a weird basque. Find the guy, sing him the song, and then get put the foam on his face, and then wait for someone to hopefully give me the money, from whoever it was that paid for me to do it.

“There was an awful lot of props to think about and juggle at once. When you’re a comedian, you sometimes do these one-off jobs. I can’t believe I did it, I had all the gear and went into the loo in the pub to take my coat off.

“I don’t think you could ever call me sexy but you had to sort of play the part as such. Everyone always looked really embarrassed, I couldn’t wait to get the money and go home. But I’d probably only got a few quid for doing it.”

More recently Helen has been starring on Coronation Street as Ken Barlow’s love interest Elspeth. She said she’d love to continue the role but hasn’t heard anything from producers yet.

Helen has also been busy releasing her memoir and shared some more funny tit bits inside the book. Helen said: “I decided to write the book just to remind myself that I’ve done. I think sometimes you get to this stage in life and you go, did I do those things? And it’s a sort of snakes and ladders type map, which you also feel, you know, the ups and downs.

“So I thought, right, I’m just going to put it all down. It’s kind of a ‘now or never’ type of moment really.”
