Dancing on Ice star ‘battling secret family heartbreak’ just hours before show debut

Dancing On Ice pro skater Colin Grafton was reportedly left in bits backstage before he and Claire Sweeney took to the ice on Sunday’s (January 14) debut show.

It’s said the skater had received a heartbreaking call that left him in floods of tears after he had learned that his father had suffered a stroke on Wednesday (January 10). Leaving his family who reside in Boston, USA, completely shook by the frightful incident.

Colin, who is currently in a skating partnership with actress Claire Sweeney was none-the-wiser if his dad would ever walk again. He had been informed that his father had undergone two brain surgeries to stem a vessel within his brain that had collapsed.

A source told The Sun: “At first, Colin wanted to get on a flight right away and be there for his family. But he knew his dad would want him to do the show, and Claire has incredibly supportive to him – she has been his rock.”

A TV insider also explained to the same publication: “On the night of the first show of Dancing on Ice, Colin’s mum called him and to his surprise his dad was able to construct a few words and communicate to Claire and Colin to have a good show, saying ‘go get it’.”

They added: “This was very emotional for Claire and Colin before the show, bringing tears to all, and the wardrobe who was getting them in the dressing room. It was just moments before the first live show, which thankfully they were not competing in.”

Following the emotional aftermath and the shock of finding out about his dad’s stroke via a phone call, Colin took to social media with an adoring picture and loving words. He penned a tribute from afar which read: “Love you Dad! You’re a fighter.”

While it was fortunate for soap star and her parter that given the shock news they were not down to skate until this Sunday’s programme aired (January 21), they appeared to be riding a wave of bad luck after Claire suffered a painful injury. With their hopes of their debut this weekend now looking slim.

They went on: “Everyone’s really hoping she will be OK for Saturday because she’s put so much effort into. Claire is in great hands. ITV has medical support on site and health and safety across the board.

“The stars know the risks when joining the show, but they are full looked after throughout. Everyone wishes Claire a speedy recovery.”
