Eamonn Holmes has revealed the stern warning he gave his eldest son Declan about the dangers of binge drinking when he was a teenager.
The TV veteran discussed the topic on GB News Breakfast while debating Kirstie Allsopp’s decision to let her 15 year old son go interrailing. During the show, after actress Debbie Arnold brought up the tragic case of Jay Slater, Eamonn recalled: “I remember, my eldest lad wanted to go off on holiday.”
He continued with concern over the teenage drinking culture: “The thing they were all doing at 18 at school was firing shots [of alcohol]. They would all take these shots and [it was all about], ‘How many shots, can you take?'”
“Except they could actually kill you!” he warned. “I took him aside and I said, son this could kill you doing this.”
Now 35, Declan is the oldest of Eamonn’s brood, born to his first wife Gabriella. He resides in Belfast with his wife Jenny and their daughters, Emilia and Isabella”, reports the Express.
Eamonn, father to four, also shares two more children with Gabriella another son Niall and daughter Rebecca. With his estranged wife Ruth Langsford, he has one son, Jack.
Despite his kids being grown up, Eamonn admitted to being a protective parent, especially when reflecting on Kirstie’s parenting choice during a chat with co-host Ellie Costello, saying: “I’m quite a cautious parent. I don’t like school trips, for instance. What is the point?”
The TV star admitted: “I’ve had to send my kids off to do white water rafting and canoeing and blooming rivers around the country. And I think, what is the point? Why do they need to know [that]. It’s not fun capsizing in a canoe with your friends in the great outdoors.”
The star confessed: “I get nervous. I think, ‘no, not, not for me’. There’s lots of things. I would ban. School trips – I just think no!”
