EastEnders fans were unimpressed with the Father’s Day tribute episode.
Viewers branded the programme the “worst episode of the year” as they struggled to comprehend why the BBC soap aired a “strange” fishing episode on Monday (17 June), which gave nods to Father’s Day and the Euro 2024 action.
Fans are normally happy to tuck into the latest dose of the soap which is set in familiar Walford. But instead, they tuned in to witness seven actors flee the hustle and bustle of Albert Square in exchange for a remote lake setting.

The programme switch-up didn’t prove to be very popular among fans, who took to X to complain. Many claimed the episode was “rubbish”. One user said: “#eastenders what in the name of rubbish is this episode!”
A second person agreed: “#Eastenders Well this is a bit boring tonight.” Another asked: “What is the point of these fishing scenes? # EastEnders,” while a fourth added: “This is boring. The worst episode of the year.”
On the episode, three dads that included Jack Branning, Billy Mitchell and Howie Danes attempted to take their three sons – Ricky Branning, Will Mitchell and Denzel Danes – out on a fishing trip to bond.
Stevie Mitchell was also present and appeared to be unhappy with everyones’ behaviour. Not one of the younger lads had been enjoying themselves as they demanded for their phones to be returned and everyone was squabbling.
The veteran couldn’t take it any longer and snapped: “Yeah, it’s Father’s Day. People think it’s card companies that invented it, it’s not. It’s American. In West Virginia a local church held a service to honour Dad’s because 362 men were killed in a mining accident just like that. Overnight a thousand kids lost…”
Continuing to air his frustrations, he added: “Their Dads, gone forever. Dad’s ain’t perfect we all know that but you only get one and at some point in your life you’re going to need him believe me.
“And Dads, you know we forget what it’s like. At school. Girls. Boys. Fights. Cut yourself a bit of slack.” At which point, the father and son duo’ all looked at each other ashamed.
Before long there were smiles all round as they chatted about watching the Euro 2024 football match at the Old Vic pub together. Jack, Billy and Howie all burst into song – singing the iconic Three Lions On A Shirt – fuelling criticism about the episode even more.
Over on X, the complaints continued to roll, with one person adding: “This is beyond cringe. It’s damaging my mental health. #Eastenders.” A second echoed: “This is not cringe at all #eastenders.”
While a third person penned: “This is awful, please make them stop singing.”
