Popular TV doctor Michael Mosley has been missing for two days – sparking a major search operation and plenty of theories about his disappearance.
This Morning star Mosley, 67, had been holidaying on the Greek island of Symi in the Aegean Sea when he was reported missing on Wednesday (June 5). According to reports, the doctor had been on a hike on the Greek island but was declared missing when he failed to return home.
A search operation has been opened close to St Nicholas Beach and nearby Pedi Beach, close to where Michael was last seen. He was said to have left the home at 1:30pm local time but was then reported missing by his wife Dr Clare Bailey, 62, at 7:30pm.

What’s more, on Friday (June 7) it was claimed that the discord had reportedly told his friends that he felt unwell before he left them – and according to witnesses, he was later seen at a bus stop.
There have been several theories considered by police to suggest a reason for his disappearance – from heatstroke and falling from a height to even a snake bite.
Stranded somewhere injured
One theory is that Mosely could be stranded somewhere, suffering from injuries due to a possible fall from a great height. In charge of the search efforts, a leading Greek official revealed that thorough measures were being implemented.
They told The Sun, saying: “Since this morning we have had all available forces out there on the island and we have asked to bring in specially trained dogs and even a helicopter from Athens for back up too. No stone will be left unturned. Symi is a small island, he can’t just have disappeared.”
A fall from a height
Greek police theorise that Dr Mosley may have “fallen from a height” while walking near St Nicholas Beach.
The mayor of Symi, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas, spoke out about the risks associated with the path Dr Mosley is said to to have taken. He noted that it is “very high cliffs” and difficult terrain.
Symi is packed full of mountains, steep cliffs and tranquil beaches. The island also has many hidden coves, many accessible only by boat.
‘Seen at a bus stop’
What’s more, a Symi local has also claimed they had seen Dr Mosley standing at a bus stop. As Greek newspaper Proto Thema reports, the resident alleged they saw Dr Mosley at 2pm in Pedi waiting at a bus stop – thirty minutes after he left the beach.
The paper also claimed that to reach the house he was staying at, the Dr would have had to walk around 1,000 meters on a path and then take a bus.
Deputy Mayor of Symi Nikitas Gryllis said: “The route is passable, it is a passable path. Many old people and foreigners do it. It is only dangerous if you go near the rocks.
“There is testimony that he was seen at two in the afternoon at the bus stop. There is no information if he got on the bus and if he got off at a certain stop. The person who saw him has also told this to the Police and the Fire Department.”
Bitten by ‘most poisonous snake in Europe’
Another theory includes a snake bite, as Symi is the habitat of the Ottoman Viper. This is the most poisonous snake in Europe – but it’s been claimed such incidents are rare.
Not much is known about the lethality of the Ottoman Viper. But it is known that similar species possess mainly haemotoxic (damages red blood cells and disrupts clotting) and cytotoxic (harmful to cells) effects. Even a small dose can be lethal to adult humans.
Heatstroke
Another theory being explored is that Dr Mosley due to the extreme heat, the This Morning star might be dehydrated, potentially causing him to faint.
Mayor Papakalodoukas expressed fears that the doctor might be dehydrated due to the extreme heat, possibly causing him to faint amidst the rugged landscape. He
Dr Mosely started his walk at 1.30pm during a heatwave. Wednesday’s temperature went and reached a searing 35C. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, the area where he went missing is forecast to reach highs of 36C on Friday.
A fall into the sea
It has also been suggested that Dr Mosley may have fallen into the sea. Symi deputy mayor, Ilias Chaskas, confirmed to the PA news agency that “divers are looking in the water.”
Symi’s coast guard said: “All our patrol boats are searching … about five and also all the private boats, commercial boats know about the incident and they look for (him) also, in this area, (so this is) the private, the commercial and the patrol (boats looking).”
Heart failure and ‘not feeling well’
It has also been claimed that before Dr Mosley set off on the short journey himself, he had told his wife Dr Clare Bailey as well as their friends, that he was feeling unwell.
Speaking on Talk TV Greek journalist Ionna Niaoti said: “It is understood that about 1.30pm local time, he said he was not feeling very well and he wanted to return home.
“So he went to a coastal path reaching the closest the village of Pedi, and this was the last time somebody saw him in Pedi.”
A senior police source ALAP told the Daily Mail that heart failure could have been a factor in his disappearance. They said: “He may have slipped and fallen, perhaps because of a heart attack along the way. Nothing at this stage can be ruled out
Lost
Dr Mosely didn’t have his phone with him during his walk – which suggested he could have become lost. However, locals to the island have noted it’s “pretty difficult” to get lost on the island “even in the most remote areas.”
Constantina Dimoglidou, a senior spokesperson for the Greek Police, said: “He was at the beach of Ag. Nikolas with another couple when he decided to go back to his home in the area of Pedi of Symi… and he forgot his phone at the beach. Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result.”
Typically, the journey from Pedi Beach to St Nikolas Beach is a 20-minute walk over gentle terrain. A source familiar with the area told PA: “I’m having trouble understanding how you could get lost.”
