Hollyoaks boss promises ‘blockbuster year’ and says soap fans are in for ‘real treat’

Hollyoaks fans are in a “real treat” this year, Channel 4 commissioner Ben Wadey has teased.

The soap is set to kick off the new year with an explosive multi-vehicle collision and not all characters will make it out alive as tragedy strikes of Sienna Blake’s (Anna Passey) and Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe)’s wedding days.

A special hour-long episode airs Tuesday (January 16) evening on E4 and Ben has shared his excitement ahead of the fatal crash. Speaking to Daily Star and other press, he said: “The special hour-long episode is amazing and I can’t wait for everyone to see it and for the audience reaction as well.”

He continued: “I think it does that thing in soap which is so hard to do which is exploding a number of stories and then confidently setting up a load of new stuff which throws us forward and the results of this stunt episode continue on for months and months so its a very confident start of the year for the show.

“It’s going to be a really, really big year for Hollyoak. Not just because of the quality of the show but we’ve just moved into our streaming first model. It’s going to be a blockbuster year with genuine shocking moments that will make you scream, mysteries that will keep you guessing and the retune of fan favourites. Some have been announced that some will be eked out across the year and I’m so excited.

Hollyoaks co-executive producer Hannah Cheers added: “The year ahead will see a lot more firsts as we continue to tell more issue based storylines which we really look forward to sharing later in the year. Excitingly, we will also have some welcome familiarity in the returns of some much-loved characters.
