Hollywood actress and Harry Potter star, 84, spotted for first time in eight years

Hollywood legend Julie Christie has been spotted in east London in a rare outing with her husband.

The movie star, 84, was seen holding hands with her journalist husband Duncan Campbell, 80. She looked effortlessly chic in a light blue shirt, and navy cargo trousers.

The Harry Potter star accessorised the ensemble with a pair of black designer sunglasses and a dramatic red scarf which she tied around her neck. The Doctor Zhivago star’s last known public appearance was back in 2016 when she was pictured popping into her local dry cleaners.

She has continued to keep a low profile since she retired from the limelight. The star is known for a series of high-profile roles including a leading role in Doctor Zhivago – which was one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Julie first rose to fame back in the 1960s with her breakout role in Billy Liar in 1963. She shared the screen alongside her romantic lead Tom Courtenay. The actor – whose husband is a former crime reporter for The Guardian – scooped up an Oscar for Best Actress in Darling in 1965.

She also received Academy Award nominations for McCabe, Mr & Mrs Miller, Afterglow and Away From Her. Far From the Madding Crowd, Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait are some of her other film roles that the actor is praised for.

Julie hit the headlines back in 1973 after she starred in Don’t Look Now, alongside Donald Sutherland. The film sparked controversy with an intimate scene between the two stars that many viewers believed to be real.

The star shot down rumours with Film4 and said the scene was nothing more than “pretend sex”, which left her and Donald “dreadfully embarrassed” while filming. The award-winning actress has also starred in Finding Neverland, Troy and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The actress later left her home in California to turn her back on the Hollywood lifestyle in favour of living on a quiet farm in the heart of Wales or the hustle and bustle of London. In 2015, she revealed why she wanted to take a step back from the limelight.

She told Daily Express: “Hollywood was against everything I had been brought up to appreciate. My late mother Rosemary was wise and frugal, quite austere. She was conscious about the environment, even in those days. I always hang up my washing outside or even on a pulley. It’s a complete waste of energy to use dryers.

“My mother’s hate of waste has filtered down to me probably because I was a war baby. There was no waste in the war, was there? Everyone had to make do with what they had got. I can’t even talk about waste without being indignant.”

Julie went on: “My introduction to Hollywood was a society which used it, sniffed it and threw it away. We have become a bit like that ourselves in Britain. There is an attitude among successful people of spend and spend, flaunt and flaunt and don’t think of anyone else. The world of celebrity didn’t mean a single thing to my mum.

“Her attitude filtered down to me, which is why I take all the celeb stuff with a pinch of salt.” Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox? Sign up for our free Daily Star Showbiz newsletter.
