Jennifer Lopez’s plunging dress was so revealing Google Images was invented for her

She is best known for her chart-topping singles and impressive acting roles.

But in 2000, Jennifer Lopez sent tongues wagging for a completely different reason. The Hollywood actress broke the internet when she stepped out onto the red carpet at the Grammy Awards.

The brunette beauty rocked her now infamous green Versace gown which featured a jaw-dropping neckline that ended an inch below her belly button. Her sheer green gown had such a strong impact that it developed one of the most widely used tools on the internet – Google Images.

The internet program launched back in 2001 in response to the demand for the pictures of the hitmaker in the green dress. Previously users had to search through pages of text broken up by links to find the image they were looking for.

As the Jenny From The Block hitmaker celebrates her 55th birthday with a bang, Daily Star has taken a deep dive into her sizzling dress that sent the internet into overdrive. Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – one user shared a screenshot of Google Images’ Wikipedia page.

The loyal fan captioned the post: “This dress was the reason Google images was invented.” Fans soon flooded to the comments to share their surprise at the unexpected link online.

One user penned: “WHAT that’s insane, I love it” as another added: “She’s an icon, she’s a legend and she is the moment.” Although it may sound unbelievable, Google executive Eric Schmidt confirmed back in 2015 that J Lo’s dress was the inspiration for creating Google Images.

He told project-syndicate.com at the time: “When Google was launched, people were amazed that they were able to find out about almost anything by typing just a few words into a computer.”

Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin – like all other successful inventors – kept on updating. The first place they started was with images, because people wanted more than just text.

Schmidt added: “This first became apparent after the 2000 Grammy Awards, where Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that, well, caught the world’s attention. At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen.

“But we had no sure-fire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J Lo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”

Before this, users could only search through a page of text divided by 10 blue links. This meant they first had to click on these links before finding out if J Lo’s dress was featured.

When Google Images launched in July 2001, the site offered access to 250 million images. Whereas today, there are a total of a whopping 136 billion indexed images on google Image Search, according to Phototutoral.
