John Cleese cheekily pretended to forget who his Monty Python co-star Sir Michael Palin was, even mispronouncing his surname, during a chat with BBC Radio 2 presenter Romesh Ranganathan.
The actor and comedian appeared on Romesh’s show this morning, engaging in a playful conversation with fellow Radio 2 star Sally Boazman when he took a swipe at Palin.
This comes amidst recent banter between the Monty Python cast members, with Cleese previously labelling Palin “boring” in another radio interview earlier this year.
Romesh broached the subject while asking Sally if she had met John before, to which the traffic news reporter replied: “I have, we met outside and the first thing he said to me was, ‘nice to meet you, you look very silly’.
Explaining his comment, John interjected: “She’s got this multicoloured beautiful dress on with all sorts of shades…” However, Sally retorted: “That’s not what the implication was John, the implication was that I looked silly. “Yes, it’s the highest compliment,” the screenwriter insisted, before Sally responded: “It didn’t endear me to you, I have to say!
Host Romesh then chimed in, telling his co-star: “Oh, wow!, Sally you’ve gone in really two footed here on John Cleese!”, reports the Express.
“Yes, she’s a bit like that, you know,” John joked, which led Romesh to reveal that the actor’s Monty Python co-star Sir Michael had shared a similar opinion on Sally when he first met her.
“Michael Palin said the same thing, you know, John,” Romesh highlighted during the chat. John Cleese couldn’t resist a playful dig, quipping, “Michael, who?”, and then deliberately mispronouncing his surname, which got a laugh out of Romesh.
Cleese didn’t hold back on the barbs either, later claiming that he looks more youthful “than the rest of the Pythons”, despite most of them being “much younger than me”.
The cheeky remarks come after a recent spat where Sir Michael hit back after John branded him “slightly boring” on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. Palin retorted during an interview on This Morning, saying, “You go back to Python, and I always played the boring character, but John couldn’t have done without me.
Palin continued, “You had to have someone selling the parrot, or someone in the argument sketch to play off. So I think I’m going to continue to bask in John’s compliment that I’m boring. The more boring I can be the better.”
