Knives Out director Rian Johnson has lifted the lid on a key industry secret that has left cinemagoers seething.
In a @moviemaniacs TikTok video, Johnson said that villains aren’t allowed to use a certain prop in Hollywood movies due to requests from one of the top companies in the world. Apple has a “villain clause,” which means that if their products are being used in a film, the bad guys aren’t allowed to lay a finger on their tech.

For the clip, Rian explained: “Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies, but – and this is very pivotal – if you’re ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera. Every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now.”
In his film Knives Out, a detective questions murder suspects and at one point, each one of them uses an iPhone – except the culprit. Fans later realised that the sequel didn’t feature Apple products at all, which kept the baddie a secret for viewers.
Fans were left fuming after Rian revealed the top secret info as they claimed the director had “ruined” any mystery movie they watch in the future. One person said: “Honestly, I wish I could unlearn this,” while someone else said: “This is the worst thing I ever learned. Now I look for it to try and find a secret bad guy.”
Another person had a clever plot twist idea for any future filmmakers: “There needs to be a spy thriller where someone’s phone breaks part way through and they switch from iPhone to Android and they end up being a traitor.”
Some people admitted that they “knew” about the Apple clause because they “worked in an art department” and branded the revelation as a “cool secret”. Others quipped that they now look for Apple iPhones “in every movie” they watch.
Fans also noted that there are some exceptions to the rule and mentioned media with villains using iPhones. One fan claimed that “Apple has no control over who uses iPhones in movies” but if the company are “supplying iPhones as props for free,” then baddies need to keep their hands off.
