Netflix drops Scoop trailer as Gillian Anderson grills Prince Andrew as Emily Maitlis

Netflix has given us a sneak peek at their new show Scoop featuring Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis.

The drama is centred around Maitlis’s explosive interview with Prince Andrew. In the teaser, fans see Gillian getting into character, touching up her makeup and taking a deep breath before tackling tough questions about Prince Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.

Viewers hear her say: “This is the story, the only story, I want it for us.” The clip also shows Billie Piper playing producer Sam McAlister, guiding everyone through the setup: “Thursday, 2pm, the Palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart.”

Keeley Hawes appears too, presumably playing one of Andrew’s advisers. The teaser ends with a glimpse of an uneasy-looking Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, famous for his role in The Holiday. After the shock of the 2019 Newsnight interview revealing Prince Andrew’s ties to Epstein, the Duke opted to step back from public life.

Beyond the dramatised account, Maitlis also worked as an executive producer on a factual Channel 4 documentary about their headline-grabbing chat. There’s another drama based on the scandalous interview in the pipeline. Titled A Very Royal Scandal, with Michael Sheen playing Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Maitlis.

Netflix dropped the trailer for the drama on Monday, tantalising viewers with the caption: “To get an interview this big, you have to be bold. Inspired by Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview comes a new film starring Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell. Scoop premieres April 5.”

One Twitter user joked after watching the trailer, saying, “Gillian Anderson making Thatcher and Maitlis hot is not good for my men’s mental health,” referring to Gillian’s previous portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown. Another remarked excitedly: “Looking forward to watching this film in April. I remembering watching the interview on tv at the time and cringing at the answers Prince Andrew gave. #Scoop.”

“Well if that doesn’t look like perfection I don’t know what does. (side note – love they are using the same interiors for Buck Pal as The Crown),” someone posted online when the trailer came out. Another person joked on Twitter to Netflix: “Missed a trick if you don’t have the premiere at Pizza Express in Woking.”

The BBC interview with Prince Andrew turned into a huge mess for the Royals and made things really bad for King Charles’ brother. The new Netflix movie, called ‘Scoop’, is all about the behind-the-scenes of the BBC’s most shocking interviews.

In the big interview, Prince Andrew said he didn’t do anything wrong with Virginia Giuffre when she was 17, because he was at Pizza Express in Woking that day. He ended up paying her to settle a court case in America. Andrew got over £12million from his mum, Queen Elizabeth II, to pay for this settlement, but he still says he didn’t do anything wrong.

“Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews” is a new show that takes you behind the scenes of the women who landed the biggest news story of the decade, breaking into the Buckingham Palace inner circle. The show stars Billie Piper as McAlister, Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk, Prince Andrew’s former private secretary, and Romola Garai as Esme Wren, who was running Newsnight during the interview. The script was written by Peter Moffat, known for his work on the BBC One drama “Silk”.
