A woman was left stunned when her friend made a ‘disastrous’ baby name blunder.
She revealed that her mate, who is five months pregnant, has started to consider names for her soon-to-be-born daughter.
In a bid to get her friends’ thoughts on the potential names, she invited them over to her place to discuss the shortlisted ones. On Reddit, the woman shared: “She’s having a girl and likes to run some of her ideas by our friend group to see what we think.
“Yesterday, we all got together to hang out and she told us her latest favourite. Chlamydia. Before I had time to recover from my shock, she began talking about how she’s always admired her in Greek mythology since we had to study The Odyssey at school.
“It takes a moment but from the context she provides in the conversation, I realise that she’s referring to Clytemnestra (if you’re not familiar and don’t want to look it up, she’s the wife of King Agamemnon and sister of Helen of Troy). So I interrupt her and say, ‘Wait, you mean Clytemnestra not Chlamydia. Right? ‘ And she’s like, ‘No, I meant Chlamydia.'”.
In an effort to prevent her from making a ‘terrible’ error, she clarified that chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease, not a character from Greek mythology. She continued: “After I bring up a Google search to prove my point, she becomes all awkward and quiet. The atmosphere for the rest of our gathering kind of dampened.”
However, upon her return home, she was bombarded with furious text messages from her pregnant friend, accusing her of “embarrassing her in front of everyone.”
The woman shared: “She says I could have brought it up in private and didn’t need to be so condescending about it. She was just talking about a name she liked and I made her feel like an idiot.
“I ignored the text because she was kind of being an idiot. She just went based on a decade-old memory of a book we read in high school and mixed up the name with a common STD. A simple Google search before getting so attached to the name would have solved the problem before there was one.”
In defence of the expectant friend, their mutual friends began criticising her for dismissing her preferred baby name. However, she countered that they were even worse friends for remaining silent, knowing full well it could negatively impact the child’s life.
Questioning whether she was at fault, she added: “I don’t think I have anything to apologise for, and besides, they were perfectly happy to sit there and let her think her std baby name would be a good choice. Imagine how embarrassed she would have been after she found the mistake later and realised that none of her friends had the decency to tell her the truth. But I feel like I’m the only one on my side, so am I really the a***hole here?”
One user chimed in with a hilarious confession stating: “Once upon a time, I legitimately thought ‘Fellatio’ was a character from Romeo and Juliet. And I can’t even blame baby brain, so.”
Another added to the baby name drama by quipping: “Clytemnestra? Not sure if I wouldn’t prefer to be Chlamydia.”
Meanwhile, a third person noted: “Candida is an actual girl’s name, though it’s very rarely used these days (likely for obvious reasons). Candice still remains reasonably in use.”
