Rod Stewart, 79, axes more tour dates after telling fans of health scare

Sir Rod Stewart has canceled additional tour dates after withdrawing from his landmark 200th Las Vegas residency show this week.

The 79 year old singer pulled out of a gig on Friday night (August 9) just hours before he was due to take the stage for the second time.

His team, in a statement delivering the unfortunate news to fans, also confirmed that he would be missing a third date on Saturday night as illness has rendered him unable to perform.

Rod’s team explained the reason for the last-minute letdown, stating they ‘regretted to announce’ the cancelled dates but the singer is ‘recovering from a summer strain of Covid-19’. Earlier this week, the singer was scheduled to conclude his The Hits show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace after performing at the venue over the past 13 years.

However, Sir Rod withdrew hours before what was supposed to be his final show at the venue, expressing his deep regret, reports The Mirror.

He added: “Most people can work with strep throat but obviously not me. I’m absolutely gutted. I’ve been looking forward to this concert for so long. My deepest regrets for any inconvenience this has caused. Thankfully we’ll now be returning in 2025 and I hope to see you all there.”

According to the NHS, a strep infection can result in symptoms such as a sore throat, a rash, nausea and vomiting, and muscle aches. It is often not a serious illness and can be treated with antibiotics.

Just hours before his stunning performance, the iconic rocker took to Instagram to announce he’ll be returning to Las Vegas for a string of “encore” gigs next spring. Alongside a clip of him belting out tunes during his residency, he penned: “Vegas, I’m having too much fun for this to end so we are coming back for an encore! “.

“Don’t miss The Encore Shows Las Vegas Residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace March 12-22 and May 29-June 8! “.

Rod Stewart, the legendary musician who rose to fame way back in 1964, reflected on his longevity in the industry as he recently cancelled part of his tour. The star candidly shared how he’s coming to terms with life’s finitude, remarking that he plans to make the most out of his remaining years doing what he loves most.

He revealed: “I’m aware my days are numbered but I’ve got no fear. We have all got to pass on at some point, so we are all in the same basket. I am going to be enjoying myself for these last few years as much as I can. I say few – probably another 15. I can do that easy mate, easy.”

And while the ‘Maggie May’ hitmaker isn’t quite the wild party animal he was decades ago, he still confesses to having his fair share of raucous nights with his band members.

He remarked: “I’m not like I was in the ’70s and ’80s and I can’t stay up all night, get drunk and go mad and still have a voice just like that. Nowadays I have to protect my voice before and after every show.”

“The older you get, the more you have to do that. Water has a hell of a lot to do with it. But no, you think I just have water on my rider?”
