Scots rocker who penned legendary song everyone remembers dies aged 77

Stealers Wheel founder Joe Egan has died aged 77. The legendary Scots musician helped Gerry Rafferty formed the band in the 1970s.

Although they split up in 1975, the enjoyed a renaissance in the mid 1990s when their song ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ was used in a torture scene in the iconic film Reservoir Dogs.

The song has since been covered by various artists, including Louise, whose version reached Number 4 in the charts upon its release in 2001. The news of Egan’s death was shared on Facebook on the page for his late bandmate Gerry, which is said to be run by a family member.

Someone wrote: “Very sad news,” while another fan typed: “RIP Joe Egan. Hell of a voice, hell of a songwriter.” More heartbroken voices joined the crowd as a third post read: “His talent was immense and it shone beautifully, alas, all too briefly.”

More people noted that they had “just heart the sad news” as they reflected on Egan’s life and talent: “May Joe rest in peace.” “RIP Joe and thank you for the music,” read one touching tribute as another fan chimed in: “Loved his voice and his songwriting.”

Stealers Wheel had many other hit songs, including Star and Everything Will Turn Out Fine as well as a number of smash hit albums. The band eventually split back in 1975 and Joe and Gerry continued to release music as solo acts.

Joe carried on smashing the charts – he released Out of Nowhere, his solo album, in 1979. It was followed by Map back in 1981. Egan was born in 1946 in Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Joe was known for his vocals, as well as music skills including playing the keyboard and the acoustic guitar. He went to school with his bandmate Gerry before their fame.

Rafferty sadly died from liver failure back in 2011 aged 63 after he was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, where he was put on a life support machine.
