Former Strictly partner and Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley appeared at the ceremony to accept the award, alongside the family of the late star. As they were joined on stage, the audience erupted into applause and a standing ovation for the mental health advocate.
Lisa, tearing up with the memories her partner gave her when she competed in the 2012 series. Paying tribute to her popular co-star, Riley gave an emotional speech that honoured Robin’s legacy as a dancer and a mental health campaigner, which also received a warm applause from the guests listening on, as many others were left in tears.
Other winners from the event included Big Brother icon and TV presenter Rylan Clark, who was gifted the award for Celebrity Ally. He was given the gong by his former Big Brother co-host Emma Willis as the audience erupted into loud cheers of admiration for the star.
Dr. Who legend David Tennant also won the LGBTQ+ Celebrity Ally Award for his continued support of the trans community. Accepting the award, he remarked: “I am honoured to win this award – I am inspired by all of you here tonight.”
As well as this, Big Brother winner Jordan Sangha and his boyfriend Henry Southan were presented with the Media Moment Award for their blossoming relationship whilst inside the house. The romance has spawned thousands of fans for the pair, as the couple accepted their award for their “real-life romance” that was birthed thanks to their time on the ITV show.
Robin tragically passed away in February, due to unknown reasons – though former Strictly co-star Kristina Rihanoff alluded to his previous health struggles in a tribute to him upon learning of his death. “Many of you, who went to see his farewell tour, know perfectly well that he spoke very openly about his mental health struggles and thoughts of a suicide,” she wrote.
“I’m sure it was devastating for anyone who loves Robin to hear something like that, but those thoughts were in his head for quite many years and it’s so deeply sad that he felt that he is better in another place rather than stay here. Too much pain too much disappointment, too much neglect.”
