TV Detectorists proven right as East Anglia has most buried treasure in the UK

Telly’s Detectorists were right… East Anglia really does have the most buried treasure in the UK.

Lovable duo Lance and Andy, played by Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook, scoured the region for lost Saxon gold. And new research shows they were hunting in the perfect location.

Some 2,686 finds have been unearthed around the UK in the past decade, show Government figures, with 1,201 in Norfolk, 776 in Suffolk and 709 in Essex – all in East Anglia.

Lincolnshire (686), Hampshire (671), Kent (634), North Yorkshire (608), Wiltshire (526), Dorset (425) and Oxfordshire (417) round off the top 10.

The sitcom, which saw Lance and Andy desperately search for the burial place of King Sexred of the East Saxons, was set in the fictional north Essex town of Danebury, but was in fact filmed in and around Framlingham, Suffolk.

In its report, Casino.org, which analysed official data, said: “Norfolk is the best place to discover buried treasure, with an impressive 1,201 recorded finds since 2012.

“This county’s rich history dates back to the Iceni tribe, ancient Britons who lived in the area before the Roman conquest.

“Suffolk, with 776 recorded treasure cases since 2012, ranks second.

“Along with Norfolk, Suffolk was part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia, a region frequently raided by Vikings and later incorporated into the Norse-occupied Danelaw under Danish King Guthrum.

“Essex ranks third in buried treasure discoveries, with 709 cases since 2012, making the East of England a prime region for finding hidden riches.

“The flat, rural landscapes of these counties are ideal for treasure hunting, which might explain the abundance of finds.”
