Underrated Nicole Kidman film rated one of ‘most disturbing movies’ ever made

A Nicole Kidman film is labelled as one of the most disturbing movies ever.

The 2003 flick is a crime thriller that also stars Chloë Sevigny, Paul Bettany, Lauren, Bacall, Jean-Marc Barr, Stellan Skarsgård and Ben Gazzara. The Lars von Trier arthouse film is described as a “parable” that takes place on a “stage-like set”.

“Grace Mulligan [is] a woman hiding from mobsters, who arrives in the small mountain town of Dogville, Colorado and is provided refuge in return for physical labour,” reads one synopsis. Dogville had extremely polarising views from both viewers and critics alike.

The story is told in nine chapters and Grace is persuaded to stay in Dogville by Tom while she is on the run. She works to gain the trust of the townspeople by doing chores before police arrive looking for her.

She is somehow forced into doing more labour for less reward as a way to keep the community protecting her. However men begin to make advances on her, women become abusive and “even the children are perverse”.

Kidman’s character is even sexually attacked and the plot begins to spiral out of control as the townsfolk turn their back on Grace. Her plans to escape do not work and Grace is eventually kept locked up, chained, beaten and made a slave.

Under a Reddit thread about disturbing movies that “make your skin crawl” or feel “uncomfortable,” someone offered up Dogville and “most, if not all, movies by Lars Von Trier”. Another person added: “Dogville was something else,” while one comment read: “Yes, Dogville, uncomfortable off the chart.”

In another thread, more film buffs flocked to discuss movies that are “extreme” and “breaks the boundaries of cinema”. Someone wrote: “Dogville is the best example of this I can think of,” which triggered one film fan to reply with: “Agreed. I know a lot of people can’t stand the rather literal Brechtian style of it but I think it’s amazing and absolutely horrifying.“

Someone else even admitted they’d “watched less than ten minutes of it” as the unique style “is not their cup of tea”.
