William Shatner, 93, would reprise Star Trek Captain Kirk role under one strict condition

Captain Kirk could make a comeback – at 93.

William Shatner, who played the Starship Enterprise’s commander in the original Star Trek, is open to reviving the role for another movie. Anti-aging technology could make the actor look younger on screen.

Shatner starred as James T Kirk, left, in three seasons of the TV show between 1966 and 1969 and five films before the character was killed off in 1994’s Star Trek Generations. But the actor said he would be happy to bring Kirk back if the story made sense. He said: “It’s an intriguing idea. It’s almost impossible.

“But it was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there – not just to make a cameo appearance – but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing I might consider it.’’

Shatner said de-aging technology would allow him to play a young version of Kirk. He also mulled over possible scenarios in which the captain could be physically resurrected. “A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” he said. “’We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here’. There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk’!”

Shatner recently opened up about how he stays healthy well into his 90s. He said: “Just staying engaged in life, to stay curious. But the luck has a lot to do with it in your health. Your life’s energy, the soul energy of your body is a product of health.

“If you’re sick, you can’t be energetic. You’re dying. So my luck has been I’ve been healthy all my life.” In 2021 the actor became the oldest man in space when he flew on Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin aged 90. He was moved to tears by the “overwhelming” real life experience.

Spilling on his secret to a long life, Shatner said: “Inadvertently, I follow many of the rules that promote good health. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I eat carefully and not too much. I exercise in a variety of ways, including getting out with the horses when I can. I keep creative. I keep busy.”

He added: “William said: “I was down and out in Los Angeles after Star Trek. I was broke, divorced and living in a tiny house. Every morning I would run a 45-minute loop that passed this house. It’s up a hill, and it’s got a great lawn, at the end of which is a small cabin.”
