BBC Breakfast host forced to apologise after awkward ‘problem’ with guest on air

A BBC Breakfast presenter issued an apology to viewers during chaos while reporting live on air with a guest speaker as a blunder left the pair in an awkward situation

One BBC Breakfast host was left red-faced during a recent live interview.

Jon Kay recently had to issue a live on-air apology today after a news segment was hit by a technical glitch. While hosting the news show alongside his co-presenter Sally Nugent, he welcomed Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to discuss the government’s push for councils in England to disclose their road improvement strategies.

Heidi also touched on the recent fires at Heathrow airport following confirmation from the National Grid’s chief executive that power was sufficient to keep Heathrow operational during Friday’s disruption, but just as the interview kicked off a technical hiccup struck which left Heidi unable to hear the studio.

Jon explained: “We are talking about the way the airport reacted, we are talking about pot holes and a lot of people watching this morning are wondering if the UK is working right and if the country is operating properly,” reports the Express.

As Heidi tried to respond, Jon attempted to pose another question, but a delay caused confusion. Heidi admitted: “Sorry, there is a slight problem with the line.”

Jon acknowledged: “Sorry, there is a slight delay!” before the host swiftly addressed an on-air blunder as he apologised: “Heidi Alexander, we have to leave it there. Thank you very much and apologies there for that time difference delay that we get sometimes when we are talking to people on outside broadcasts.”

BBC’s Nina Warhurst recently announced her departure from Breakfast(Image: BBC)

This comes after BBC star Nina Warhurst recently announced that she is leaving the beloved early morning news programme. Nina has hosted the show since 2018 and became the main business presenter back in 2020 after Steph McGovern left the role.

Nina will now be joining the BBC News at One team and proudly took to X/Twitter to share her joy.

She wrote: “Hanging up the high-viz & hairnet as I join the BBC’s News at One. Our London team built a gem of a programme and it’s a privilege to be on the Salford team taking it forward (the teenage me who lived half a mile from here and dreamed of journalism would NOT believe it).”

Nina posted some throwback snaps from her time on the BBC news programme and continued her caption, writing: “The second photo was almost exactly seven (!) years ago.”

“I was heavily pregnant, very nervous, and unbelievably excited to be offered a few shifts on the national broadcast treasure that is @bbcbreakfast … @stephlunch took time to show me the ropes and help me feel at home.”

Warhurst noted that her job was “made permanent after lockdown” and said it was a “privilege to help support audiences through a tumultuous time”.

She added: “”When I was a teenager hoping to work in journalism, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine there’d be all these opportunities half a mile from my Salford home.”

The beloved BBC star rounded off her announcement by writing: “Ps – I’ll still be popping up on the red sofa – if only to continue torturing Roger with my stories of air frying and washing lines.”
