There was utter pandemonium at BBC Radio 2 today as Jeremy Vine’s show got hit by an unexpected fire alarm, leading to the crew being turfed out for a nail-biting 20 minutes. In the heat of a discussion, a voice suddenly interrupted, ordering staff to immediately abandon ship.

Quick to keep things smooth, Jeremy dished out an apology and flicked on some tunes as they figured things out. The music played on for almost 20 minutes until Vine could hop back on air.

Vine explained to his listeners: “It’s BBC Radio 2. Jeremy Vine here. I do apologise, we did just have a proper fire alarm here. There wasn’t a fire but we had the thing that I’ve not had in 20 years where not just one light goes off but two.

“The orange light which means there could be a fire and then the red light and then the announcement in the studio which looked as if there was one. We came out the building. We stood outside in the sun. There’s no fire. We came back in. Because there is no fire we are going to cancel the item we were doing on cremation.”

Back on track with his show, Vine couldn’t resist making light of the situation with a guest, chuckling: “It was a very impressive evacuation by the BBC, we have got to take it seriously,” reports the Mirror.

Listeners were soon buzzing on social media about the abrupt break from the usual programming.

In a flurry of tweets, BBC Radio 2 listeners were all abuzz, with one tweeting: “Fire alarm goes off at the studios of BBC Radio 2 during The Jeremy Vine Show. The building was evaluated [evacuated] for the first time in 20 years according to Jeremy Vine,” and another adding their shock: “Wow.. Actual dead air live on BBC Radio 2.. Fire alarm goes off at the studios during Jeremy Vine slot and the building’s been evacuated by the guess of it.. Never heard a radio station go silent like that before and now it seems like it’s on auto-pilot..”
