Claudia Winkleman is unrecognisable in unearthed throwback as fans say she ‘sounds posh’

Claudia Winkleman, 50, has always been known for her iconic fringe and bubbly personality, but she was unrecognisable in a throwback clip from the 1990s as she shared her dating tips

Fans are in shock after unearthing a vintage clip of a youthful Claudia Winkleman, who looks and sounds drastically different from her current persona.

At the age of 24, The Traitors host was already gracing BBC screens – not as the household name we know today, but as an up-and-coming ‘dating expert’ and ‘Chat up Connoisseur’.

Way before her renowned fringe became her signature look, Claudia rocked a quintessential 90s hairstyle. The nostalgia is strong with a throwback to 1996 on BBC One’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick. In this golden oldie, Claudia shares her top “flirting tips”.

TV hosts Nick Owen and Anne Diamond delve into her love life, where Claudia lets slip that although she seldom gets chatted up, it’s always a treat when it happens. She honed in on the importance of “eye contact” and its “real meaning”, stating: “Eye contact. It’s all eye contact but it can be terrifying,” reports the Mirror.

In her typical witty style, she depicted scenarios like “making eye contact for an hour and a half and then he’ll leave.” When hit with the query of whether girls like being chased, Claudia said yes, but suggested they’re often the initiators, saying: “If a girl comes up to a guy saying ‘do you want a light?’, she’s got four boxes of matches in her bag. She does not want a match, she wants something else.”

Claudia also left fans gobsmacked with a throwback interview from her pre-fringe days. Speaking about boys and rejection, Claudia dished out some advice: “Boys are so sweet and I don’t think they realise. The fear of rejection is huge – they have to embrace it.”

The blast from the past clip has blown up on social media. One baffled fan posted the snippet on X, formerly known as Twitter, exclaiming: “I can’t stop watching this 1996 interview with Claudia Winkleman that is 0% fringe and 100% posh phone voice.”

Echoing the surprise, another added: “This era of Claudia and Victoria Coren Mitchell were separated at birth and you can’t convince me otherwise.”

Fans didn’t hold back, with one quipping about her posh twang: “No why does she sound like a member of the royal family?” and another joining in the fun, jokingly dubbing it “Claudia: The Princess Diana Years.”

Someone even said it felt like a time warp: “Surely this clip is actually from the 1950s…she’s speaking like she’s just nipped out of the typing pool.”

After a break, Claudia returned to dazzle on telly in The Traitors’ third series, kicking off on New Year’s Day on BBC One. In a castle setting in Scotland, a mix of contestants hustled for the grand £120,000 prize.
