Colin Farrell was named best male actor in a TV movie or limited series at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for his role as The Penguin in the Batman spin-off
Colin Farrell blurted out a swear word on stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The Hollywood star, who looked totally unrecognisable as The Penguin in HBO’s Batman spin-off, couldn’t help but use the F-word at the star-studded event in Los Angeles on Sunday night (February 23). It came after Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis hilariously blamed him for giving her Covid as she honoured him with a gong.
The 48-year-old Irishman bagged the coveted gong for outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or limited series for The Penguin, in which he sported extraordinary prosthetics as he portrayed the DC Comics villain of the same name. At the glittering Shrine Auditorium Expo Hall soirée, Curtis announced while presenting the award: “And the actor (gong) goes to the man who gave me Covid at the Golden Globes, Colin Farrell.”
The two actors shared a moment of laughter and a warm embrace as Farrell took the stage. Accepting the accolade, Farrell quipped: “Guilty as charged, but Brendan Gleeson f****** gave it to me. So I was just spreading the love.”
Farrell, hailing from Dublin, was previously in the race for an Oscar for his performance in the darkly humorous 2023 Irish flick The Banshees Of Inisherin, in which he starred alongside fellow Irish thespian and his former In Bruges co-star Brendan Gleeson.
Both Gleeson and Farrell graced the Golden Globes with their presence that same year, along with Curtis – nominated there for her supporting role in the cosmic sci-fi epic Everything Everywhere All At Once – only to announce post-ceremony they’d all been hit by the virus, causing them to bow out from a stretch of the awards cavalcade, reports the Irish Mirror.
At the Golden Globes that year, Farrell nabbed the best actor in a comedy or musical statuette for The Banshees Of Inisherin. Curtis clinched the coveted supporting actress Oscar.
In his acceptance speech at the SAG Awards, Colin Farrell expressed his gratitude towards his family and lavished praise on “the two people in my life who have made my life so much more special and so much more meaningful and so much more joyful than I ever truly thought possible: my son James and my son Henry.”
He also reflected on the nature of acting, stating: “The annoying thing about what we do, it’s just unquantifiable. It’s playtime. You don’t get to fully grow up.
“You get to kind of keep the dream of a child alive, to try to figure out what it is to be human, and it’s so much fun.” Farrell also expressed his “his deepest respect and admiration” for his fellow nominees.
Among those nominated were Scottish actor Richard Gadd for Netflix’s dark comedy Baby Reindeer, Irish star Andrew Scott for the thriller Ripley, US actor Kevin Kline for Apple TV+ show Disclaimer, and Spanish actor Javier Bardem for Netflix’s true crime series Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story.
