Countryfile sparks complaints as gobsmacked BBC viewers demand ‘trigger warning’

Countryfile hosts Adam Henson and Charlotte Smith fronted the latest episode of the BBC nature show, but viewers were rather taken aback by what they were seeing

Viewers of Countryfile complained about a rather unexpected scene featuring a bull.

It’s not the first time the beloved BBC One wildlife show has gotten itself into hot water with some of its viewers. Some, for example, weren’t too impressed when the show took a deep dive into fishing, and others wondered why an episode was focusing so much on the D-Day landings.

On Sunday (February 23), hosts Adam Henson and Charlotte Smith led the programmefrom the heart of Scotland as they journeyed to the Stirling Bull Sales, a prestigious event in the farming calendar. Over two days, they observed around 300 pedigree bulls at the sales auction, where bulls are sold and displayed.

The spectacle attracts thousands of buyers, sellers, and enthusiasts eager to see and bid on the country’s best livestock. During the early evening show, Adam teamed up with local farmer Graeme Fraser to prepare his prized Aberdeen Angus bulls for sale, documenting their journey throughout the event.

Meanwhile, Charlotte explored the buying process, learning how bidders catch the auctioneer’s attention and secure a top-quality bull for their herds, according to the Express. Viewers also got a glimpse of the woman behind the camera capturing stunning images of the prize bulls, as well as the dedicated caterers, vets, and auctioneers who ensured the event ran smoothly.

However, viewers’ attention was diverted when Adam shed light on the stringent criteria the bulls must meet to enter the auction. It included a rigorous health inspection with vet Charles Marwood.

He kicked things off by explaining: “This is the business end really, it’s really important that the bulls have two fully descended testicles which are symmetrical with no lumps or bumps and then we measure the testicles. Each breed varies with age and circumference, and this one is 43 centimetres.”

Adam asked: “Is that good? ” and the vet confirmed: “Yes, that’s above average for his breed.” Adam added: “And actually, that’s where the money is actually, isn’t it? Because he’s going to produce calves, so that’s essential.”

One viewer revealed they’d been put off their tea

The vet concluded: “This guy next year should be settling 95% of his females over a nine-week period so if he’s not good down there then he won’t be reaching those figures”. However, viewers were taken aback by the candid inspection, flocking to X, formerly Twitter, to share their astonishment.

One viewer remarked: “There needs to be a trigger warning for this show in future #countryfile,” and another agreed, saying: “I was eating my tea in front of that #countryfile”

A third quipped: “#countryfile How to mix a load of bull with a load of b***s [cry-laughing emoji].” Some fans, however, relished the episode, with one writing: “Really enjoyed this episode, great atmosphere in the sale ring #countryfile #stirlingbullsales.”

Post-show, Adam revealed that several of Graeme’s bulls snagged a rosette at auction, making it the most triumphant outing he’s had in his farming life.
