EastEnders fans have predicted that Grant Mitchell could be set for a surprise romance as he returns to Walford after six years away from the square
EastEnders’ Grant Mitchell, played by Ross Kemp, could be in for a surprising new romance in Walford, according to the soap’s fans.
Grant first appeared on the scene back in 1990 alongside his brother Phil (Steve McFadden), quickly becoming one of the show’s most iconic characters. After leaving in 1999, he made comebacks in 2005 and 2016. This week, however, saw Grant return to Walford, much to the delight of EastEnders viewers.
Several characters have been making their comeback recently in preparation for the soap’s 40th anniversary, including Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley). Now, Grant has also returned.
As fans will remember, his brother Phil is currently battling mental health issues, dealing with depression and psychosis. In Thursday’s emotional episode (February 13), viewers were given a glimpse into his hallucinations, featuring several significant figures from his past.

After an emotional conversation with his mother, Peggy Mitchell (Jamie Winstone), Phil was brought back to reality in his home holding a gun. Nigel then arrived, suggesting that Phil might appreciate seeing a familiar face, reports Plymouth Live. Then, Grant appeared in the doorway, much to Phil’s relief.
The buzz around Grant’s return to the square has been building since its announcement earlier this year, perfectly timed with the soap’s 40th-anniversary celebrations next week. But now that Grant is back on the scene, eagle-eyed fans reckon they’ve sussed out his jaw-dropping new love interest.
Hitting the web with their theories, soap enthusiasts are betting on sparks flying between Grant and Elaine Knight (played by Harriet Thorpe) – despite her being hitched to George Knight (Colin Salmon). “Thoughts on these two together? ” posed one fan, slapping up a couple of snaps of Elaine and Grant.
The comment section lit up with viewers buzzing over the potential fling. “I’d love to see them flirt, because Elaine has more charisma than Sharon could ever hope,” quipped one eager beaver. Another chimed in: “I would be down for this! Love Elaine.” And a third added their two cents: “As long as he doesn’t get back with Sharon!”
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
