EastEnders star Lacey Turner left ‘uncontrollably sobbing’ in bed after huge family loss

EastEnders star Lacey Turner has spoken about her heartbreaking miscarriages and the emotional journey she went on to have a large family with husband Matt Kay

EastEnders’ Lacey Turner has shared her heart-wrenching path to becoming a mum-of-three, revealing the emotional rollercoaster she endured.

The actress, known for her role as Stacey Slater, recently welcomed a baby girl named Gipsy Olive and is also a proud parent to another son and daughter with her hubby Matt Kay, whom she’s been with since she was just 15.

However, their journey to a family of five wasn’t without its hardships, as Lacey experienced two miscarriages before their brood was complete, with the first occurring at age 29.

Speaking on the Happy mum Happy Baby podcast, she recounted the struggle they faced when trying to conceive: “We tried for so long and it just didn’t happen and I thought okay, I didn’t realise it was such a small window, you just don’t really think about that.

“And then I started to have miscarriages and that’s when you go… I remember the first one, it was just terrible. I remember laying on the bed and I was just uncontrollably sobbing,” reports the Mirror.

“But I had this weird thing like, ‘Why are you crying? Why are you so sad for something you didn’t know? Something that is barely there.’ I think actually the part of it is the shock of, ‘This is actually happening to me.'”.

Now 37, Lacey opened up about how miscarriage remains a hushed topic, expressing her surprise at the silence surrounding it.

She turned to Google in search of answers and lamented the lack of guidance on what steps to take next.

Opening up about the heartache of miscarriage, a topic she’s been transparent about to support others, she expressed: “I think that was made me so sad… I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to have this baby. And I’m not going to put this baby in this lovely pram.

“And I’m not going to have that picture walking out of the hospital.’ It is all the things you associate with having a baby, your first baby, all the things you are excited for. The first outfit, it all sort of went..”

After enduring a second miscarriage, Lacey welcomed her daughter Dusty in July 2019 and then her son Trilby two years on.

The start of this year saw the arrival of little Gipsy Olive, after which Lacey made a swift return to Eastenders, appearing in the live episode marking the show’s 40th anniversary.

In a heartfelt chat, Lacey revealed that the scars of miscarriage robbed her of the joy typically felt during pregnancy.

“It was terrifying and it did take away the excitement of being pregnant,” she confessed.

“Even with Gipsy, my mum would say, ‘Can we buy stuff now?’ It would be like 34 weeks, well no you can’t, didn’t buy anything, didn’t have anything.”

She continued: “The third time it was easier, I still didn’t buy anything. I made up these superstitions in my head that became really massive. Like if I brought the pram in the house, the baby would die, or whatever it was.”

Lacey spilled the beans on getting a pregnancy scan fortnightly, all because she was eager to hear the heartbeat and see her bub growing properly.

She opened up about her fears, saying: “I was so terrified of losing it. And I never wanted to go back to that place and feel how I felt then.”

Back in January, Lacey posted a snap of her little one donning a cardie with “Gipsy” emblazoned on the back.

Following her third trip to the delivery room, she penned: “Our hearts are full.”
