Chief Medical Examiner for the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, James Gill has mused over two potential theories about the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife
Gene Hackman or his wife Besty Arakwawa could have died from a broken hard, a pathologist has claimed. The legendary actor, 95, was found dead at his Santa Fe home in New Mexico last week with his wife Betsy, 65, and one of their dogs.
Their bodies were discovered in separate rooms of their 2,300 square foot ranch, decomposed and partially mummified, with no obvious signs of trauma. It had been stated there was no sign of a gas leak at the property.
A search warrant stated the local utility found no sign of a leak and the fire department had detected no indication of a carbon monoxide leak. And while investigations continue, several potential theories have been made – with the latest coming from a pathologist.
Chief Medical Examiner for the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, James Gill – who is unrelated to the case – has claimed that one of the pair could have found the other dead and died of a “broken heart-type thing”.
Speaking to People, he said: “From the initial kind of circumstances, it seems like he may have collapsed. He’s got a history of heart disease. He’s got a pacemaker. So that would not be unusual. But the unusual part is that why then did she also collapse?
“Assuming she would’ve found him. Then you start wondering about: There is this thing where the stress of seeing someone die that could have triggered a natural death in her.”
He also theorised that it could have been the other way around, and that Betsy was the first to die.
“He found her and was going out to get help or get his phone,” he mused “and he then collapsed from the stress of that, too. Just as likely. He’s older, he’s got known heart disease. But the autopsy would certainly show if she had heart disease or cancer or what have you.
“It has been known to happen, kind of a broken heart-type thing, almost.”
The investigation is still ongoing.
