Glastonbury fans brand headliner Neil Young ‘dreadful’ as crowd noticeably empty

Rock legend Neil Young has headlined Glastonbury again on Saturday night, but his set has left music fans divided, with some hailing it as a beautiful masterpiece and others a dreary snoozefest

Veteran rocker Neil Young’s headline Glastonbury set has been branded “dreadful” as the Canadian star appeared to perform to a sparse crowd on the Pyramid stage. The Heart of Gold singer, 79, seemed to be besieged by sound issues during his set as social media users slammed the choice of Saturday night headline act.

Meanwhile, access to the Woodsies stage — where US pop group Scissor Sisters were playing — was restricted due to huge crowds, organisers said. And British singer Charli XCX was also performing on the Other Stage, attracting an energetic crowd.

But photos from Young’s set show huge open spaces in the crowd in front of the Pyramid stage, a far cry from usual bustling crowds for the spot.

One social media user said: “Watched five minutes of Neil Young and he doesn’t exactly scream Saturday night headliner. More entertainment at a pub karaoke night.”

Another said: “Feel bad for Neil Young man surely everyone picked Charli XCX,” to which someone replied: “Even Scissor Sisters by the looks, Woodsies is full.”

One Twitter user pointed out: “Don’t remember them turning the Pyramid lights off on the crowd like this at Glastonbury before, crowd in darkness, is it because it’s quite sparse for Neil Young?”

Another said: “I’m quite fascinated by what size crowd Neil Young has attracted at Glastonbury but the aerial shots are so dark, you can’t get any perspective.”

Elsewhere, one fan criticised his setlist, tweeting: “*Watches first Neil Young song* yeah we know what kinda set he’s gonna play, and it ain’t a crowd pleaser.”

Others said they struggled to hear the rocker, with one wag quipping: “Neil Young has 60+ years in showbusiness but hasn’t mastered singing into a microphone.”

However, those that were in attendance seemed to enjoy the show and one social media user noted: “Hearing the crowd singing to Harvest Moon absolutely proves Neil Young was the right choice… beautiful. Thank you for the music Neil!”

Jake Shears, lead singer of fellow headliners Scissor Scisters, told the BBC he was “sad” as he would “love to sit down and watch a Neil Young show”. His band members agreed but with their set ending at the same time as the 79-year old’s, they wouldn’t have a chance.

Young last headlined the festival in 2009, when his management wanted to restrict the number of songs shown on television and online to preserve the “mystery” of the event. In the end, five songs were aired.
