The classic gameshow Blind Date may well be returning to our televisions over 20 years since broadcasting legend Cilla Black introduced singletons – some of which are still married
A legendary match-making TV show from the 80s could be “returning” with Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall rumoured as potential hosts. If Blind Date is revived, it will be 22 years since it was hosted by Cilla Black.
In a twist the classic ITV gameshow will not be revived by the BBC, as was previously expected, but by global streaming service Disney+. The rumour is the producers want to keep to tradition with a top British female host with Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall all in the running.
The love-based gameshow was famed for its sliding wall separating contestants and the popular feature is also set to make a comeback. It is unknown if the producers will keep the role played by Graham Skidmore – aka as ‘our Graham’ – who provided Cilla with a summary of each contestant. He died in 2021 at the age of 90.
An insider told the Sun: “Although there’s likely to be some modern twists, the bosses very much want to keep the essence of the original. There’ll be key elements returning, including the famous sliding wall.
“Plus there will be a prize up for grabs of a wedding package, which echoes Cilla’s famous gag whenever couples had enjoyed a successful date, and she used to ask, ‘Do I need to buy an ‘at for the wedding?'”
Last year, a Blind Date couple were found in a viral video – and they were still happily married three decades on. In a video posted to X, the person recording stopped Sue and Alex in the street to ask if the duo were a couple, which led them to explain their love story.
The man said: “We met on television. We met on a TV game show, it was called Blind Date.”
The woman’s face lit up as she mentioned the show’s host Cilla Black, while her husband revealed that fans of the show can “look them up online”. He continued: “17.5million people watched our wedding!”
His wife smiled sweetly and leaned on his shoulder as the pair reminisced their big day. Alex explained his favourite thing about his wife: “The fact that actually, she’s as beautiful today as she was when I first met her,” before Sue added: “He’s so kind and he makes me laugh all the time!”
Their advice for anyone else preparing for a blind date? “Go into it with an open heart and just go in, make the most of it and be positive. And be nice!”
