Glastonbury Festival saw Lewis Capaldi make a surprise appearance on Friday – two years after he last performed at the event and before he took a break from the spotlight
Lewis Capaldi made an unexpected but mighty return to the Glastonbury Festival stage tonight, two years after his last performance at the event. The ‘Someone You Loved’ singer was back in the spotlight today, marking two years since his previous appearance.
Addressing the crowd, he said: “I just wanted to come and finish what I couldn’t finish first time round”.He then thanked Glastonbury bosses for inviting him back before making a gag about his surprise appearance leaking, by adding: “Also this was like the worst kept f****** secret – who’s been f****** telling people?”
Earlier in the day, Lewis unveiled a new track titled ‘Survive’. Accompanying the announcement post, he shared a video with the caption: “It’s been a while.”
The heartfelt song features lyrics such as “I swear to God I’ll survive” and “I’m going to get up and live until the day that I die,” marking his first release since taking a break due to mental health concerns.
Lewis has previously spoken candidly about his struggles with mental health and hypochondria. In 2022, he revealed: “If I’m having a panic attack there’s nobody else that can help me out of it except my mum, for sure.
“My mum has had to sleep in my bed as recently as a month ago because of how bad my anxiety got at one point. But I think that was alcohol related to be honest, I had been on a bit of a bender,” reports the Mirror.
He further added: “It never really reached a tipping point until after getting famous, I never had a panic attack until after I was famous, or after I was a musician or after I got to a height. The hypochondria – I guess looking back, I was such an anxious kid, but now because I understand it a lot more with therapy and I speak about it a lot more with people and try to learn more about it, I look back at it and think the behaviour was a result of anxiety.”
During his previous Glastonbury performance, Lewis had difficulty completing his set. His voice wavered and he apologised to the audience: “Glastonbury, I’m really sorry. I’m a bit annoyed with myself.”
The crowd then took over singing Someone You Loved.
“I feel like I’ll be taking another wee break over the next couple of weeks. So you probably won’t see much of me for the rest of the year, maybe even. But when I do come back and when I do see you, I hope you’re still up for watching us,” he informed the audience.
Visibly moved, he confessed: “I genuinely dreamt of doing this. If I never get to do it again, this has been enough.”
He kicked off his set today with Before You Go and told fans “second time’s a charm”, alluding to his previous performance, adding that he wanted to complete what he couldn’t before. He expressed his gratitude to fans for their support during the gig and in its aftermath, admitting he didn’t want to say too much or he’d become emotional.
His performance was interrupted by chants of “Oh Lewis Capaldi”, but he halted them, explaining he only had a short set and limited time. He thanked the audience: “Thank you for being here, genuinely. For each and every one of you.”
Tears welled up as he began to sing his new song Survive, which was released today. He stated his sole aim was to return to the Glastonbury stage as he paid tribute to his fans.
At the end of the song, he struggled to finish the track, the emotion clearly overwhelming him as he passionately sang the final words. But the crowd loved it – well done, Lewis!
