EXCLUSIVE: Villa favourite Toby Aromolaran has weighed in on Love Island’s future, admitting viewers have “seen it all”, but he has an idea for bosses to spice things up
Love Island star Toby Aromolaran has admitted he ‘doesn’t know how long Love Island has left”.
The 25-year-old Hashtag United footballer shot to fame on the 2021 series of Love Island, where he came second with ex Chloe Burrows. He returned for All Stars last year and got with Georgia Steel, but they split up not long after.
However, he believes the ITV dating show may have run its course, or at least for now, and needs to change if it’s going to keep fans hooked. It comes as Love Island’s All Stars series is suffering a decline in ratings, with less than 2million viewers an episode, and calls for it to be shelved.
Viewing figures have been dropping since the fifth season, with the winter series doing the worst. The past three seasons have averaged under 3million viewers an episode.
Toby, who also did Love Island Games, believes the show has run out of twists and fans “know how it all ends”. The footballer reckons bosses need to find a way to “throw some drama” into the villa for fans to get excited about.
Speaking on behalf of Genting Casino, Toby told Daily Star: “Honestly, I don’t know how long Love Island has left. The show had a real pull for people. But you can go on the show and come out without love and a bad reputation. It’s hard to deal with the public if they’re negative.”
Asked if he thinks the show should take a break, he said one series a year was better. “Well, I think the format before, when it was one show a year it was good” he said. “Everyone got excited. Now we have two a year, it’s like having two Christmases. Now we have 2 Christmases, we can’t really go back to one Christmas, so we can’t really go back to one Love Island again.
“I don’t think people would adapt back to it. What twists can we do now that haven’t been seen to keep it fresh for everyone? We’ve seen it all, it needs to be a bit more creative. Find a way to throw some drama in. Even with the drama, we’ve seen a lot of drama and we know how it all ends.”
Toby suggested All Stars could introduce a Casa Amor of its own to spice things up. “In All Stars, if they did Casa Amor, an All Stars Casa Amor, that would be crazy,” Toby said.
“Such a sensory overload. Imagine seeing all your favourite islanders thrown into Casa Amor? That would be sick. It’s just like something creative that, like we, we haven’t thought of that keeps the viewers on their toes.”
He also revealed he’d been in talks with Love Island bosses about a potential return to the villa. “It’s one of those ones where everyone spoke to [the producers] at least once, or even had a phone call,” he said. “I’ve spoken to them, had a chat with them. I always speak to them anyway because I’ve been there twice, three times if you count The Games. I chat to the producers, they chat with me.
But it seems he’s unsure about going back in and feels he may be too “immature”. “Going back in, that’s another thing,” Toby said. “I think I might be too immature! I don’t know if people can handle me being immature again, the self reflection I’ve had, especially this season where everyone is so grown up and stuff.
Teasing he has a crush on one Love Island star, he added: “Maybe someone like me is not meant to be in this line-up. I am still looking for love! But there’s only one person who could make me go into the villa, who would make me excited. One girl anyway, but I’m not outing her like that.”
