Married At First Sight Australia viewers were left fuming over a controversial groom during the first episode of the 2025 series.
Married at First Sight Australia fans were up in arms within moments of the 2025 series premiere on E4 this Monday (March 3).
The hit reality show made a comeback with a new gang of hopeful singles ready to tie the knot and take the plunge into married life.
Kicking off with the traditional stag and hen parties, the lads and ladies got to mingle and chat about their dreams for the upcoming social experiment.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing, as 35-year-old entrepreneur Eliot caused quite the stir at the stag do when he started reeling off his strict “non-negotiables” for his future missus.
“I have very high standards. The way I see it is high standards are you protecting against wasting your time with the wrong person,” Eliot said, reports OK!

He made it crystal clear that he wouldn’t even consider walking down the aisle with a woman he deemed “trashy” or “obnoxious”, confessing he’d bail on the wedding if he wasn’t keen on his bride-to-be’s appearance.
Eliot didn’t waste any time butting heads with Tim, a 38-year-old primary school teacher, after they clashed over their views on romance.
Tim’s confession about being the type to “over-care” for his partner earned him an “ick” label from Eliot, who reckoned being too lovey-dovey was a massive turn-off.
“That to me is a bit of a red flag. I think it can be an ick if you are over-caring… Tell her she looks awful, trust me,” Eliot controversially advised.
During the episode, MAFS fans quickly took to social media to express their frustration over Eliot’s controversial views. One viewer posted: “The fact that the experts would allow someone like Eliot into the experiment speaks volumes.”
“Eliot needs to be careful with his words as saying stuff like that can be hurtful and have really bad consequences to someone,” another chimed in.
A third viewer commented: “If you’re going on #MAFSAU you shouldn’t be going on expecting your usual type or have huge standard levels. You’re there because everything else to this point hasn’t worked out. A lot of delus this season.”
Meanwhile, other viewers praised the grooms for calling Eliot out on his comments: “The men calling Eliot out on his misogynistic bulls*** immediately is what we love to see, toxic masculinity free zone! Green flags all around.”
The experts paired Eliot up with 37-year-old business owner Lauren, who seemed to share many of his beliefs about traditional gender roles.
They hit it off at the altar, but Lauren’s unruly sister, Tamara, threatened to ruin the day when she stormed out of the reception. As they head off on their honeymoon, will their connection grow?
Married at First Sight Australia airs Monday to Thursday on E4 at 9pm
