The Rocket Man singer revealed he was recording a new song when he began to weep after contemplating how much time he has left on Earth
Sir Elton John revealed that he was reduced to tears for 45 minutes as he pondered how long he had left to live.
The pop legend, who turns 78 today (March 25), recently opened up about his health struggles, particularly over losing vision in his right eye due to an infection.
Sir Elton also recently slammed X Factor and branded Elon Musk an “a******” as he has become ever-more outspoken in recent months.
The Rocket Man superstar candidly opened up about thinking of his own mortality while recording a track for his new album. Sir Elton found himself in tears when making When This Old World Is Done With Me, thinking of what it would mean to leave behind his two sons – Zachary Jackson, 14 and Elijah Joseph, 12 – as well as his husband David Furnish.
Speaking on the Smartless podcast – hosted by Hollywood actors Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman – he shared: “I wrote a song at the end of the album and I just get the lyrics, Bernie Taupin’s lyrics called When This Old World Is Done With Me.
“And so I’m writing the verse, like, ‘Oh, this is really pretty’. And then I get to the chorus and, of course, it’s about my death.
“When you get to my age, which is near 100, you think, ‘How much time have I got left?’
“And you’ve got children, you’ve got a wonderful husband, you just think about mortality. So, when I got to the chorus, I just broke down for 45 minutes and it’s all on film.”
The emotional song is included on the upcoming album Who Believes In Angels?, which he recorded with American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. It is due to be released on April 4, reports Bristol Live. Brandi believed that everyone should witness the touching moment captured in his Disney+ documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, describing it as a “really human, like deeply flawed and embarrassing” experience.
“I want everybody to see it because it’s really human, like deeply flawed and embarrassing,” she urged. “And the kind of s*** that you do when you forget that there is a camera on is what’s really interesting.
“He got to the end of that chorus and his voice started to shake and I thought, ‘Oh, he’s going, like he’s going to really go’. And he went into a real moment.”
Previously discussing his disdain for X Factor, he told Rolling Stone: “Backbone is so important, because the worst thing that can happen to you in the industry are things like X Factor and instant fame on television where you have no experience of playing live.”
