White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood slammed Saturday Night Live over the weekend after they mocked her in a skit, which she branded ‘mean’
Aimee Lou Wood has revealed Saturday Night Live has apologised after their “mean” White Lotus skit.
The British actress played fan-favourite Chelsea in the third season of the hit HBO show and has seen her net worth soar recently, which concluded last week. Viewers watched as the identities of those in the body bags were finally revealed, as well as the fates of the other characters after the many fan theories.
SNL parodied the show in a skit called The White Potus, which followed the Trump family and other political figures at a White Lotus resort. But it did more than just mock Trump, as it also targeted Aimee and her teeth.
Sarah Sherman played the parody of Aimee in the skit, wearing massive prosthetic teeth. And it didn’t sit well with Sex Education star Aimee, 31, who spoke out on Instagram.
She said: “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the p*** for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
During the skit, Rick, who was played by Walton Goggins, was reimagined as Robert F Kennedy Jr. He went on a strange rant about toothpaste and how they’re taking “all the fluoride out of the water”.
In response, the character supposed to be Aimee says: “Fluoride? What’s that?”
Netflix star Aimee went on: “I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the p*** out of when it’s clever and in food spirits.
“But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth.
“I don’t mind caricature – I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on… okay end of.”
She had previously said: “I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny.”
Hours later she confirmed she had heard from the comedy show, saying: “I’ve had apologies from SNL.”
Days earlier, Aimee had opened up about her imposter syndrome when it came to being cast on The White Lotus.
She told GQ: “Someone told me how much Mike [White, creator] fought for me. They said ‘it had to be you, no matter what HBO said.’
“It was honestly from the nicest place, but my little head goes: ‘HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I’m ugly. Mike had to say ‘Please let me have the ugly girl!'”
Aimee clarified over the weekend that those comments had only been what her imposter syndrome had made her feel, insisting HBO had been “nothing but supportive”.
