Wondering why your kid keeps talking about a Chicken Jockey? We’re here to help you decipher the chaos surrounding The Minecraft Movie’s most boisterous viral moment
In case you missed it, The Minecraft Movie is making waves at the box office.
The film, which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge and more, has been a runaway success at the box office, but it’s also been in the headlines for a very different reason.
While it’s perhaps not unexpected to have a movie about the biggest-selling game draw some cheers from longtime fans, particularly younger ones, one trend has seen viewers bringing live chickens into screenings and throwing popcorn in celebration of the Chicken Jockey.
What is the Chicken Jockey? We’re so glad you asked, as this is definitely what we thought we’d be writing about when we moved into journalism.
Minecraft Movie’s Chicken Jockey scene explained
As you might have worked out, Minecraft’s infamous Chicken Jockey is inspired by something from the game that the movie is based on.
Minecraft features zombies, but they have a 5% chance of spawning as a baby in the game. Each of those zombie babies (which, don’t forget, are rare) has a small chance of spawning as a chicken jockey.
The odds are 0.2375% of seeing one in a “chicken-free environment”, according to the Minecraft Wiki, while those odds go up to 0.4875% if there are chickens present (we’ve learned to just stop asking questions at this point).
Essentially, they’re very rare, making them almost impossible to find in the game, but fans are losing their minds over seeing them on the big screen in one scene.
If you’re a nineties kid like me, it’d be a bit like seeing Mew for the first time in the Pokémon movie, or maybe seeing the fabled Missingno appear – something which was discussed on playgrounds throughout the years.
What have the cast and crew said?
The movie’s director Jared Hess has released a statement about the situation. “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” said Hess.
“It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos.
“It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”
