EastEnders killed off a character this week, revealing Stuart Highway as a murderer in a chilling storyline that came without warning.
The police are currently investigating the attempted murder of Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), who was left bludgeoned and fighting for his life on the floor of the Queen Vic.
Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks) was initially concerned her husband Stuart was behind the grisly deed – only to learn he had done something significantly worse.
Stuart (Ricky Champ) confessed to murdering DI Thompson (Philip Wright), his brother Callum Highway’s (Tony Clay) boss, in a moment of fury.
The copper hasn’t been seen in Walford since Ian’s attack, with Stuart revealing he’d accidentally killed him on the night of the assault.

Desperate to cover up his tracks, Stuart burnt Thompson’s clothing in the allotment, and stuffed his body inside one of the fridges in their funeral parlour.
News of Thompson’s death may come as a surprise to viewers, as there is often a build-up to character exits on the soaps.
The confession came when Rainie quizzed Stuart about his alibi on the night of Ian’s attack, saying: “what could be worse than attempted murder.”

A flashback scene then outlined the attack, showing Stuart lose his temper with the nasty copper, only for DI Thompson to fall to the ground.
Trying to defend his little brother, Stuart then explained: “I swear it is not what I intended to happen. I was just gonna shake him up a bit.
“I would never, you know me I’m a gentle guy… I just got this rush of blood to my head. Standing up for someone that I love, I mean he’s my little brother…”

When Rainie realised he wasn’t talking about Ian, he continued: “Thompson, Callum’s boss, he was giving him a hard time so I was just gonna talk to him, scare him a little bit, down a dark alley and get in his face.
“But then he got really lippy and he came at me, and I just defended myself and he just… one minute he was there, the next he’s out like a light.”
Stuart then let his wife know where the body was stashed, in their funeral parlour, leading her face to fall open in horror.
However, Rainie vowed to stand by him, saying: “I’m proud of you for being honest about the dead man in our fridge.”
How long will it be before the truth – and law and order – catches up with Stuart?
