What Radio 1 DJs did next – drive-by shooting to fatal drug-fuelled bondage

The 90s and 00s was a great time for music and the stars of Radio 1 became the voices of a generation.

Attracting millions of listeners, the presenters were household names and regular fixtures on TV shows like Top of The Pops, too.

But where did they go once their contracts ended – or, in some cases, terminated early?

Some continued to enjoy successful broadcasting careers, while others found themselves in trouble.

One has sadly passed away and another is lucky to be alive after a terrifying incident.

Here are seven of Radio 1’s popular presenters from the 90s and 00s and what happened next.

Lisa I’Anson

Lisa I’Anson missed her show after a night of clubbing in Ibiza

London-born Lisa l’Anson started her DJ career on Kiss FM when it was still a pirate radio station.

She joined Radio 1 in 1995, initially presenting the lunchtime show before moving to a weekend slot.

Her Radio 1 career came to an abrupt stop in 1998 when she was sacked for a no-show.

The popular presenter didn’t turn up for the live programme after a night clubbing in Ibiza.

She was dismissed from the station a few months later. In 2005, she took part in Celebrity Big Brother.

After picking up work on BBC London and Magic 105.4, the 55-year-old now presents a show on Solar Radio.

Tim Westwood

Tim Westwood was injured in a drive-by shooting in 1999

Widely referred to as simply ‘Westwood’, Tim was one of Radio 1’s biggest names for almost 20 years.

The privately educated son of a bishop joined Radio 1 in 1994 and his rap and hip hop shows quickly won awards and huge audiences.

In 1999, Westwood was injured in a drive-by shooting after performing at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park.

The superstar DJ and his assistant were shot in their Range Rover by gunmen on a motorbike.

When he left Radio 1 in 2013, he moved to Capital FM and the 63-year-old now presents a show on Capital Xtra.

Kevin Greening

Kevin Greening worked at Radio 1 with Zoe Ball

Kevin Greening joined Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast Show in the summer of 1994.

A year later, took over the Radio 1 Weekend lunchtime slot before moving to the Drivetime show.

Greening left Radio 1 in 2000 and then moved to Radio 5. Greening died one day before his 45th birthday in 2007.

He had spent part of the previous night at a club night in Southwark. A post-mortem revealed that Greening died of a heart attack after taking large quantities cocaine, ecstasy and GHB.

At the inquest, a verdict of death by misadventure was recorded as a result of a self-induced drug overdose during a bondage session.

Jamie Theakston

Jamie Theakston, who also worked at Radio 1 at the same time as Zoe Ball, was one of the BBC’s main presenters

Jamie Theakston was one of Radio 1’s brightest stars between 1999 and 2002 before launching an even more successful TV career on children’s show Live and Kicking with Zoe Ball and Top of the Pops.

But the clean-cut presenter was forced to make an embarrassing apology in 2002 when it was revealed he had sex with three prostitutes in a Mayfair brothel.

The star, who had recently split from actress Joely Richardson, told the Daily Mail he had been ‘ foolish’ to visit the sex parlour, which featured a ‘bondage dungeon’.

In a statement, Theakston said: ‘It was one night before Christmas that went too far.

‘It is extremely embarrassing and I would like to apologise to my close friends and family.’

Theakston, now 50, continues to work in TV and on stage in the West End.

Andy Kershaw

Andy Kershaw spent time at Her Majesty’s pleasure

A familiar face on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the 80s, Lancastrian Andy Kershaw joined Radio 1 in 1985 and became an award-winning pioneer of world music, particularly African.

Kershaw’s contract with Radio 1 ended in 2000 but he continued to work for Radio 3 on and off for a number of years, returning in 2020 for a special show.

In 2007, Kershaw was jailed for repeatedly violating a restraining order which required him not to contact his ex-partner.

A year on from the stalking conviction, Kershaw, now 61, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for breaching a restraining order.

Liz Kershaw

Liz Kershaw said she was groped by a Radio 1 colleague

In the early 90s, Liz Kershaw, Andy’s sister, presented the Radio 1 Evening Show and then went on to work closely with Bruno Brookes on the weekend breakfast show.

She grabbed the headlines when she jokingly smashed up a Wet Wet Wet record live on air because she didn’t approve of the band failing to turn up on the Radio 1 Roadshow.

In October 2012, Kershaw, now 62, told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that she had been groped while working as a Radio1 DJ in the 1980s.

“I’d been routinely groped by a colleague while I was talking on air,” she told the Daily Mirror. “He’d stick his hands up my jumper to put me off my stride by fondling my breasts.”

She now presents a show on Radio 6.

Chris Moyles

Chris Moyles now presents a show on a rival station

After moving up the ranks of local radio in his native Yorkshire, Chris Moyles presented his first show on Radio One in 1997.

He started on the breakfast show – known as The Early Bit – and within a year, he won DJ of the Year in the Sony Silver Awards.

By 2005, Moyles was attracting a record 6.5 million listeners for his breakfast show and the awards kept coming.

His style wasn’t without controversy and he was accused of homophobia in May 2006, when he rejected a ringtone by saying “I don’t want that one, it’s gay”, live on air.

The 47-year-old, who has lost lots of weight in recent years, left Radio 1 in 2012, to be replaced by Nick Grimshaw and now presents The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X.
