Piers Morgan brands GMB host Alastair Campbell 'hypocrite' in scathing takedown

Piers Morgan has branded his Good Morning Britain replacement Alistair Campbell as a “hypocrite” in his new column.

The 56-year-old outspoken presenter walked away from the ITV breakfast show in March this year after five years as host.

However, it appears that Piers still watches GMB and he tuned in on Wednesday morning to watch Alistair, 63, and his former co-star Susanna Reid interview former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The conversation quickly turned to the comments Mr Blair had made about former Downing Street communications chief Alastair in his memoirs.

In his book, the former Labour leader penned: “You said that there are two types of crazy people, there are crazy people who are just dangerous, and there are crazy people who are creative and give you energy and ideas, and that’s Alastair’s type of craziness”.

Quizzing his old boss over his use of language, Alistair asked: “Do you accept that’s a tad stereotyping of mental health?”

Mr Blair tried to make a joke of it but later admitted that he’s of an age where he’s “terrified” if he can talk about any of these subjects.

“It is a minefield on virtually everything. If you are of a certain generation, you are not sure what you can or what you can’t say. Or whether you can make a joke about something you cannot make a joke, so I will leave it at that,” he said.

Piers was left “stunned” by Mr Blair’s response and “fear of being cancelled”.

The former newspaper editor wrote in his MailOnline column: “There were several ironies to this humiliating spectacle.

“The first is that Campbell has previously called himself ‘crazy’.

“In an interview with UK tech firm Plexal, he said: ‘There is no better feeling than that energy that you have when you’re a bit kind of crazy and a bit manic.

“So, he only seems to object to stereotypical mental health language when it is other people using it, the same kind of hypocrisy we see all the time from those woke warriors Meghan and Harry who love to preach about equality and climate change from their Californian mansion and private jets.”

Piers latest dig at Alistair comes just after he mocked his temporary replacement when latter got the wrong end of the stick during an online exchange.

On Tuesday, Piers took to Twitter to question if celebrities cash in on mental health campaigns as it is a frequent topic of conversation for stars to spotlight on social media, TV and interviews.

The father of four posted: “I’m curious to know just how much money famous ‘mental health campaigners’ are making from constantly preaching about it & exploiting their myriad ‘problems’ – and what percentage of that money they give to mental health charities.”

He added: “Celebrity victimhood is a lucrative business.”

Taking issue with the tweet, and assuming it was a personal attack, Alastair hit back at his GMB predecessor.

He tweeted: “If you mean me @piersmorgan – @schooltruth and I have a charity account which takes a share of my earnings, which go to causes we believe in, mainly mental health and education for poorer children.

“I do paid speaking gigs and often ask for fees to be paid to charity.”

Piers denied Alastair had been the inspiration for his Twitter comment, hitting back: “No, I was talking about celebrities..”

Alastair simply replied: “Ah ok!”
