Corrie's Imran actor had whirlwind romance with co-star after 10 year friendship

Charlie de Melo’s personal life used to mirror his work life when he dated one of his Coronation Street co-stars.

The actor, who is better known as Imran Habeeb on the popular soap, had a relationship with Nicola Thorp, who plays Pat Phelan’s daughter Nicola Rubenstein.

They had a close friendship for 10 years before romance blossomed between the two of them while they starred together on the cobbles.

The couple looked to be going from strength to strength with lots of sweet snaps on social media, but the relationship began to crumble when Nicola briefly left the cobbles.

In January 2019 reports emerged that said the couple had split for good with a source telling The Sun at the time, that they had decided to “cool things” after growing apart.

They said: ”Nicola’s brief departure from the soap earlier this summer put a strain on their relationship, even though she’s returned to the cobbles now,” said the insider.

“They’ve decided to remain pals – although they aren’t hanging out as much platonically as they they did before they were a couple and have been tending to go to separate.

“As long as it doesn’t get awkward at work they’re happy, that’s their main concern, they also won’t be flaunting any new partners in front of each other, they plan to be very professional.”

Nicola only stayed on the soap for a few more months before she left for good and admitted that being on the show had interfered with her love life.

Speaking to the Daily Star she said: “I’ve used dating sites in the past and they can be brilliant, especially if you’re busy working.

“I’ve met some really interesting people even though it might not have worked out romantically, we’ve become friends.

“It’s funny because I’ve been out recently and have had a good-looking man look at me in a bar, and then I’d pluck up the courage and confidence to go and say hello, and I’ll get: ‘Aren’t you Phelan’s daughter?’

“And I’m like: ‘Damn it! I thought you were going to ask for my number but you just want a photo to show your nan.'”

Charlie remains on the soap, with his character currently at the centre of this weeks explosive post-watershed episodes, where Imran will unravel Sam’s kidnap mystery.
