Phillip Schofield has blasted a ‘selfish’ mum who has already spent £2,500 on Christmas toys.
In a segment which appeared on Wednesday’s episode of This Morning, the 59-year-old presenter appeared alongside his co-host Holly Willoughby to interview two British mothers, Rachel Marsden and Pat Smith.
The women appeared on the show to explain how they had ‘spent thousands on Christmas already’, with Rachel explaining from her Leeds home how she had stockpiled over £2,500 worth of Christmas gifts for her own children.
Rachel said she was inclined to buy the gifts after experiencing delays in her gifts arriving last Christmas and amid fears of HGV driver shortages this festive season.
She said: “With the shortage of lorry drivers – I did start to panic and think, ‘I need to get out there and get them now, or we might have a horrible Christmas’.”
Questioning her decision, Phil replied: “Isn’t what you’re doing quite selfish?
“In the fact that you’re buying a shedload of stuff, probably more than you need, and preventing other people who just want to buy one or two presents from getting what they want?”
This Morning viewers seemed to be in the same mind as Phil, as they took to social media to suggest the behaviour was “excessive” and “ridiculous”.
One disgruntled viewer wrote: “300 presents!! How many children does she have? That is absolutely ridiculous.”
Another commented: “That is simply excessive and selfish. Phillip is so right!!! Buying Christmas presents in June should be a crime.”
Meanwhile, a third viewer responded: “Fair enough buying presents a bit earlier but come on, that’s a joke.”
This Morning airs from 10am on weekdays on ITV
