Richard Madeley has quit I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! just hours after he was taken to hospital after falling ill at while staying at Gwrych Castle.
The 65-year-old television presenter logged into her Instagram on Thursday to share the sad announcement with fans.
He penned: “Hello all! Richard here – firstly just to say that I’m absolutely FINE.
“I started to feel briefly unwell in the small hours of the morning and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
“By leaving the camp, I had consequently broken the Covid ‘bubble’ and as such I’ve had to leave the castle and all the wonderful celebs that remain in the camp.
“Obviously I’m gutted to be leaving so soon but the safety of all the campmates is the number one priority. I’m incredibly excited to watch their journey continue…even more so at the prospect of being somewhere a little warmer than Gwrych Castle.”
He added: “Thank you to everyone who supported me on my brief but completely unforgettable adventure – I’ve made some great friends and honestly had the time of my life.
“Speak soon, Richard x”.
I’m A Celeb has a long, proud history of celebrity hissy fits and tantrums, so Daily Star has taken a look back at some of the shock exits and walk-outs the celeb contestants have staged.
Danniella Westbrook (Series 2, 2003)
EastEnders star Danniella sensationally quit the jungle nine days in because she was so sick of being away from then-husband Kevin Jenkins and her two children.
She kicked off after weather presenter Sian Lloyd was voted off before her and demanded to leave, telling the public: “Do not bother voting for me.
“I have had my fill of being in the camp, I have done my bit for charity. Vote for the others.
“We have all worked for it, but I just want to get out of here.”
She was given a psychological examination and spent the rest of her time Down Under in a 5-star luxury hotel.
Brian Harvey (Series 4, 2004)
East 17 singer Brian didn’t have the best of times in the jungle, but the last straw for him was his massive argument with Loose Women’s Janet Street Porter over his constant farting.
He told her: “You’re cooking dinner! You’re f***ing over there, I’m over there. Don’t keep f***ing having a go at me about farting! Just because you think it’s wrong doesn’t mean everyone else thinks it’s wrong.
“I’m farting because I need to f***ing fart, because all I’ve eaten is f***ing beans!”
Brian had not been having a good time of it on the show from the off.
As soon as he got to Australia he learned from his father that his grandmother had died, and then went on to fail his House of Pies challenge later in the same week.
Natalie Appleton (Series 4, 2004)
Pop star Natalie walked from the show on the day she was nominated for her fifth Bushtucker Trial by the public.
The All Saints singer’s failure to score stars at the previous trials had left the camp hungry and lethargic – which she said was becoming a vicious circle of not having enough energy to do the trials.
Viewers, who in the first show of the series saw Natalie afraid of a tree, had delight in picking the nervous celebrity to take part in a variety of challenges, including eating bugs and walking a trolley across a tightrope high in the jungle canopy, where she screamed for her mother.
After failing to do well in the challenges, including winning just one meal for her camp mates during her fourth challenge, Natalie decided to walk rather than take part for a fifth time.
Katie Price (Series 9, 2009)
Former glamour model Katie returned to the Austrialian jungle for a second time five years after meeting now ex-husband Peter Andre on the show to get “closure” on their dramatic break-up.
However, the Pricey’s plan didn’t exactly work and she quit after just nine days in camp.
Explaining her decision to leave, Katie said at the time: “It’s not about the money, it’s not about winning for me – I just don’t want to be here any more.”
During her exit chat, she then famously dumped husband number two Alex Reid live on air.
Cage fighter Alex gave her another chance and the pair got married and then divorced.
Mother-of-five Katie is now dating former Love Island star Carl Woods.
George Hamilton (Series 9, 2009)
Hollywood star George bid an emotional farewell to his fellow I’m A Celebrity jungle mates back in 2009 as he quit the show less than a week before the final.
Revealing why he walked out, the movie star said he didn’t want to see any of the other stars lose to him.
The performer was regarded as one of the favourites to be crowned king of the jungle after his smooth and charismatic persona became a hit with viewers.
But speaking to hosts Ant and Dec, he said: “The last thing I wanted was to go one-on-one with people.
“I have too much respect for them. I just thought, ‘Why don’t I leave while I’m on a high?'”
He added: “As much as I would like to win, because I’m competitive, I just didn’t want to see any of them lose. Sometimes you lose to win.”
Gemma Collins (Series 14, 2014)
TOWIE icon Gemma lasted just three days before she dramatically walked out in a fit of tears in 2014.
Despite being in the jungle less than 72 hours, The GC packed in the drama into her brief stint Down Under.
First there was that helicopter ride where she spent most of it crying, then shortly after that she had the worst shower ever as she bravely took on the jungle’s washing facilities.
But possibly worse still was the “yellow poo” and the worry that she may have Malaria (she didn’t).
Craig Charles (Series 14, 2014)
Soap star Craig heartbreakingly quit the jungle after being told of the death of his brother Dean.
The Coronation Street favourite was the second celebrity to leave the show that series following Gemma Collins’ shock departure.
An ITV source confirmed at the time: “Craig was told the sad news earlier today.
“He was devastated and decided to leave straight away, but did stop to say his goodbyes to his fellow celebrities.
“He was a great part of the show and we are sorry to see him leave but completely respect his wishes.”
Spencer Matthews (Series 15, 2015)
Made In Chelsea’s Spencer quit the show after just two days and before even entering the main camp.
The reality star reportedly was given an ultimatum after he flipped out at ITV bosses over a drugs row.
Spencer, who later admitted he had a steroid addiction, swiftly left the camp, something which he says he was forced to do.
Before entering the jungle Spencer stressed he wouldn’t say the immortal words “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” even if his “life depended on it”.
“I could break both my legs and both my arms, and I will never shout that… ever. So don’t worry about that,” he had said.
Lady Colin Campbell (Series 15, 2015)
Lady Colin Campbell was probably one of the most divisive campmates the I’m A Celeb jungle has ever seen.
She managed to split the camp into haters and supporters with anyone not on her side immediately open to stinging insults and dirty looks.
Lady C decided to call it quits on her jungle experience just four days before the final in 2015 and made a swift exit on “medical grounds”, it was claimed at the time.
A friend of the royal author told the Mirror at the time there was “a lot more to tell” but declined to comment further.
Lady C later sensationally claimed she had been “bullied” by fellow contestants Duncan Bannatyne and Tony Hadley.
Jack Maynard (Series 17, 2017)
Hosts Ant and Dec left viewers shocked back in 2017 by saying Jack had left the show after just three days in camp.
The YouTuber was rocked by headlines that he had posted racist and homophobic slurs before he joined the show – and even more damaging revelations then emerged.
Following a number of damaging stories in the press following his exit, Jack broke his silence on the scandal by releasing an emotional YouTube video.
Speaking on his 23rd birthday he said: “I’m sorry to anyone that I upset, anyone that I offended, anyone I made feel uncomfortable.
“Growing up I was all over social, my entire life was on social media and through that it led to be my job.
“I’ve tweeted some bad things, some horrible things, that I’m just ashamed of.
“I never wanted to make anything like this, I feel like I’ve let you guys down so much, I was young, I was stupid, I was careless I just wasn’t thinking.”
I’m A Celebrity airs nightly on ITV at 9pm
