Emmerdale actor Darcy Grey is set to cause a stir when he makes his debut television appearance on the ITV soap next week but his road to success has been far from easy.
The actor, 30, has been cast as Marcus Dean and will arrive in the Dales to find out more about his dad Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather) from Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry).
Pierce was jailed for raping Rhona after their wedding in 2017, with Marcus’ arrival following the shock reveal that Pierce is dying of cancer while serving out his jail term.
Speaking recently, Darcy revealed that before being cast in Emmerdale, he was a failed actor who spent 18 months selling dog food after struggling to find theatre work during the coronavirus pandemic.
Before the pandemic hit, he had tried unsuccessfully to make it as an actor in LA.
Darcy told The Mirror: “It has been a long hard graft to get to this point, and when Covid hit, it was a total wipeout.
“There were moments where I wondered whether the acting work would ever come back.
“I managed to get a job selling posh dog food at the weekends, which was a saving grace. I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t.”
On his challenging career, Darcy added: “It was very much the case of keep on going, and just not giving in when I was attending the auditions.
“So now that I am actually in Emmerdale, it really is a pinch me moment.”
Darcy’s bad fortune looks to be turning around as Marcus is set to play a pivotal role in the ITV soap.
The character will arrive in the Dales short of friends, with Darcy also teasing that the village will rally around Rhona when Marcus turns up.
On his Emmerdale character, Darcy added: “Marcus arrives in the village looking for answers. His life has been turned upside down and he hates his dad so much.
“He knows Rhona was raped by his dad and that’s why he went to jail, but he wants to find out more. For Rhona, though, it is a dark and very upsetting time when Marcus turns up out of the blue.
“He is the last person she wants to see. If people weren’t on Rhona’s side, I would be very surprised.”
Emmerdale airs on ITV.
