Former EastEnders star Kacey Ainsworth has revealed a soap return is not on the cards at the moment, as she takes on a ‘fabulous’ new role that is worlds away from her Albert Square character.
Kacey, who played Maureen ‘Little Mo’ Slater in the popular BBC soap, is currently appearing in Mam I’m ‘Ere at Liverpool’s Royal Court as Brenda – one of three mums who could potentially be a brides mother in the hit musical, which is a take on the Mamma Mia story.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star about the musical, Kacey has opened up about why she does not think there is ‘room at the moment’ to return to the soaps – and showcasing her singing and dancing skills in her glamorous new role.
After leaving Eastenders in 2006, Kacey has appeared in a number of theatre productions and TV series, including Sweeney Todd at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre, and currently plays Cathy Keating in the hit ITV series Grantchester.
However when asked if she would ever consider returning to EastEnders, Kacey said: “I’ve done so much since I’ve left.
“I’m a regular in an ITV series that’s now…we’re onto our seventh series of that.
“I’ve done so many things. Mrs Lovitt [in Sweeney Todd at the Everyman Theatre], I’ve just finished a play called Lava in London.
“I do so much stuff, I’m not sure there’s room at the moment.”
Her current role as Brenda in Mam I’m ‘Ere is worlds away from Little Mo, and sees Kacey belting out huge hits including Boogie Wonderland in her glamorous new role.
A talented singer and dancer, Kacey explained that she loves to try different things, saying: “The great thing is that I always like to do different things from what I’ve done before.
“From Mrs Lovitt to this, it’s quite a massive stretch. I always do this.
“Every time I have a job, I decide to do something different from the next. It’s great for me and stretches all my acting chops.
“Now my singing and dancing chops. It’s nice to go back and do stuff like that, which I did earlier on in my career.”
Describing Mam I’m ‘Ere as “fabulous” and “funky”, she adds that every time she comes off stage there is always a “massive buzz.”
Written and directed by Stephen Fletcher, and featuring an all-star cast including Lindzi Germain, Andrew Schofield, Alan Stocks, Liam Tobin, Michael Fletcher, Hayley Sheen and Lynn Francis, Kacey could not help but gush about the musical and her co-stars ahead of the show.
“It’s brilliant and the atmosphere is incredible.”
“Lindzi Germain and Andrew Schofield – watching them doing the show and what they bring to it, and how the audience react to them when they come out on stage, is incredible.
“They’re loved because they’re brilliant at everything. They can sing, they can move, they can act. It’s the same for the rest of the cast. It’s been a really lovely experience.”
Speaking about the musical, which features seventies hits and has been seen by over 50,000 people since it began in 2012, she said: “You can go from laughing your head off to quite sad little scenes, and they’re all brilliantly written. It’s a joy.
“I really don’t know of another place that’s like this,” said Kacey, adding: “people will love it for lots of different reasons.”
But will any of her famous friends be in the audience dancing along too?
“Well I’m sure there will be, but I daren’t say who is coming!” said Kacey.
“I’m sure there will be. They always come and support, which is brilliant.”
Mam I’m ‘Ere is at Liverpool’s Royal Court until July 16, 2022.
