Rachel Riley, C4 star and Steps icon react as Daily Star lettuce outlasts Liz Truss

Celebrities across Britain have rushed to congratulate the Daily Star’s lettuce on its sensational victory over Liz Truss.

Prime Minister Liz Truss announced on Thursday (October 20) that she was resigning as PM after 44 days in the job, making her the shortest serving PM in British history.

But more importantly, it means the Daily Star’s 60p lettuce managed to outlast the Tory leader after a nail-biting political battle that could be watched via a YouTube livestream.

The wet lettuce has already become something of a cultural hero in recent days, so it should come as no surprise that some of the biggest stars in showbiz wanted to congratulate the vegetable on its historic political win.

You can watch the Daily Star’s lettuce claim its victory below.

But it should be noted that, at this time, the lettuce has refused to confirm if it will stand to be Britain’s next PM.

Countdown beauty Rachel Riley was one of the first stars to celebrate the lettuce’s win over its rival Liz.

The stunning mathematics queen took to Twitter on Thrusday afternoon and wrote: “A heartfelt congratulations to the lettuce” with a string of applauding emojis.

Although the lettuce has refused to comment on its political future, there’s a firm chance the lettuce could try its hand at crunching numbers on Countdown, especially if Rachel is a fan.

Sue Perkins

Former Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins was quick to react to the news, and it seems she too is rather fond of our lettuce leader.

That’s because she gave the Daily Star some suggestions for its next lettuce-like campaign ahead of the next PM taking over.

Smart Sue had clearly taken quite a lot of time out of her busy schedule to help us with our next trick as she revealed a hefty list of potential tory leaders and their vegetable rivals.

She started off in her tweet: “OK, we’ve had Liz vs the Lettuce. Suggested new Daily Star shelf-life stunt (dependent on next PM)”

The presenter went on: “Rishi vs the Reishi Braverman vs the Braeburn Mordant vs the Mange Tout Wallace vs the Watercress Badenoch vs the Butternut Squash”

Ian H Watkins – Steps

Steps singer Ian H Watkins joined in the fun too when he took to Twitter with a snap from the Daily Star’s lettuce livestream.

The pop star joked that our lettuce had been roped into a TV broadcasting career when he quipped: “Back to the lettuce in the studio… #GenerealElectionNow”

If he fancies bringing the lettuce along to an episode of Steph’s Packed Lunch, we’re happy to get in touch with agents and the like.

Channel 5 newsreader India Willoughby was another name happy to heap praise on the lettuce.

She tweeted: “The lettuce WON @dailystar #LizTruss” alongside a star emoji.

The Loose Women star was quick off the mark as one of the first stars to point out the lettuce’s win on social media.

Ryan-Mark shot to fame as the youngest ever candidate on The Apprentice back in 2019.

The Daily Star columnist and former Celebs Go Dating contestant is known for his unfiltered takes on the biggest stories of the day.

But he was in party-mode on Thursday when he tweeted: “So proud of the Daily Star lettuce.”

Divina De Campo

The lettuce got support from Divina De Campo, who shot to fame on the first series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

The drag queen, who’s real name is Owen Richard Farrow, jokingly wanted to know if the lettuce was running the shop now that Liz had stepped down.

They asked: “So is the lettuce prime minister? #lettucegivethanks”
