EastEnders’ Perry Fenwick admits he wasn’t happy about Danielle Harold joining BBC soap

EastEnders star Perry Fenwick has admitted he wasn’t too happy about Danielle Harold joining the soap as his character’s granddaughter initially.

The star has been reminiscing about Danielle’s time on the soap as Lola, as her tragic death quickly approaches in scenes to air next week.

Danielle joined the soap as Billy Mitchell’s granddaughter Lola Pearce back in 2011 and was later re-introduced in 2019 – but Billy actor Perry has confessed he wasn’t best pleased.

He told Daily Star and other press: “On her first day, they said to me that they were casting this young girl as my granddaughter. Well I wasn’t chuffed about that! I wasn’t excited about her coming in to be honest.

“So I asked, what’s she done before?’ And they said, ‘She’s never acted before’. Alright, cheers. But they were right because they said, ‘We think she’s a rough diamond but you’ll be able to polish her up.”

Billy will be forced to say his goodbyes to Lola in upcoming scenes, with her final episode set to air on Wednesday (May 31).

It was confirmed in October last year that she would die of a brain tumour, and she will soon lose her tragic battle.

The funeral scenes have already been filmed, with photos taken on set showing a parade of cars all with flowers paying tribute to Lola.

Speaking of the storyline, Perry said it was “without a shadow of a doubt” the saddest one he’d been involved with.

He added: “I’ve been on the show 25 years this year and I’ve seen a lot of people come and go but my last scenes with this one [Danielle Harold] were just devastating.

“We have tear sticks on set. Sometimes it’s impossible if you’ve got a scene at the end of the day and it’s four pages and it’s emotional, and you’re trying to put yourself into some really horrible places to try and wretch this out.

“So they give you a tear stick and it burns your eyes and makes you cry. No tear sticks on any of this, we were just like, ‘We don’t need them’. And that’s all I can say really.”
