Dan Walker admits he has ‘no regrets’ over BBC exit as he feels more ‘alive’

Dan Walker has admitted he has “no regrets” over his decision to leave BBC Breakfast and move to 5 News, as he now feels more “alive”.

The 46-year-old quit the BBC in June 2022 and moved over to Channel 5, with his new boss giving him a series of targets – and it appears as though he’s enjoyed the new challenge.

The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant said that he was left questioning: “Have I made the right decision?” at the time – but now he’s “convinced that it was the right thing to do at the right time.”

He added: “It’s a massive job to say farewell to, but I don’t regret it.”

Dan was given the target of growing 5 News’ audience by 20% year-on-year, as well as bringing awareness to the show – and he was also given the chance to present non-news shows.

But on top of that, he was able to change his morning alarm from 3am to 6am.

Dan said that his more comfortable wake-up call has left him feeling “far more creative and alive”.

He added to Press Gazette: “When I used to get up at three I never used to worry about it because I enjoyed the job and, for about four hours, you feel like you’re ahead of the game because your mind is clicking and being creative while everyone is in bed.”

And it seems like Dan has been a great new hire for Channel 5, as, according to the publication, 5 News saw an audience growth of 30% in the year since the presenter joined.

Dan has also fronted a number of other Channel 5 shows, including Vanished: The Hunt For Britain’s Missing People, and archaeology show Digging for Treasure.

And for a travel-based show, Pennine Adventure, he will be teaming up with Helen Skelton, and the duo have already started filming.

He’s now been given another target of boosting the news show’s audience share by 3% to 5%.
