Lewis Capaldi struggles with Tourette’s during Glastonbury set but fans step in to help

An emotional Lewis Capaldi was rescued by his fans as he appeared to suffer with his Tourette’s condition on stage at Glastonbury Festival.

The 26-year-old singing sensation took to the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm on Saturday (June 24) afternoon in front of thousands of fans.

But as Lewis started singing one of his biggest hits Someone You Loved, near the end of his set, he was forced to pause.

And suffered bodily ‘ticks’ – an involuntary movement – associated Tourette’s syndrome.

At this moment, the thousands watching in the crowd took over and started singing the lyrics for Lewis.

He looked genuinely touched as he walked across the Pyramid Stage but could only manage singing short bursts of the track.

During the set Lewis had apologised for his voice saying it ‘had packed in’. He said: “Glastonbury, I’m really sorry. I’m a bit annoyed with myself.”

Lewis was called ‘brave’ and ‘honest’ as he put on an ‘amazing show’ and he was dubbed a ‘top bloke’ who had ‘nothing to apologise for’.

One said: “The crowd singing ‘Someone you loved’ for Lewis Capaldi was bloody lovely. #glastonbury2023”

Another added: “I think that was a genuinely great #Glastonbury2023 moment. Crowd supporting Lewis through a tough moment.”

Last year, he announced that he’d been given a diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome, and he recently appeared in a candid Netflix film documenting his mental health issues.

Before the set Lewis told fans: “This is genuinely quite a surreal thing.

“I am, quite literally, s****ing my pants.”

It comes after Lewis released a heartfelt and honest statement a few weeks back, revealing how he needed time off after struggling with his physical and mental health.

Addressing his break to the Glastonbury crowd, Lewis revealed he plans to take more time off in the future, as he got emotional.

He told the crowd: “I recently took three weeks off just because I’ve been none stop the past year and I wanted to take a wee break from my head for my mental health.

“I wanted to come back and do Glastonbury because it’s obviously so incredible so I just want to thank you all for coming out. I was scared but you’ve really made me feel at ease so thank you very much for that.

“I feel like I’ll be taking another wee break over the next couple of weeks so you probably won’t see much of me for the rest of the year maybe even. But when I do come back, when I do see you, I hope you’re all still up for watching.”

After performing Bruises, Lewis admitted he was starting to lose his voice – but that he was going to power through to end of his slot.

He told the crowd: “I’m going to be honest everybody but I’m starting to lose my voice up here, but we’re going to keep going and we’re going to go until the end.

“I just need you all to sing with me as loud as you can if that’s okay?”

Lewis has since been supported by his millions of fans – including Piers Morgan.

Taking to Twitter, the TV presenter shared a video of the crowd singing back Someone You Loved to Lewis.

He also penned: “Wow. This was amazing. Kudos to @LewisCapaldi for not quitting – and kudos to the #glastonbury2023 crowd for singing him through his obvious issues.

His original statement read: “This is a really difficult message, and one that hurts me a lot to have to type, but I’m really sorry to say that I’m going to have to cancel all commitments from now until I play Glastonbury on June 24.

“It’s been such an incredible time leading into this new album, and seeing all of the support from everyone has been beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of.

“That said, the last few months have been full on both mentally and physically, I haven’t been home properly since Christmas and at the moment I’m struggling to get to grips with it all.”

He continued: “I need to take a moment to rest and recover, to be at my best and ready for Glastonbury and all of the other incredible shows coming up so that I’m able to continue doing what I love for a long time to come.”

“I need to take these three weeks to be Lewis from Glasgow for a bit, spend some time with my family and friends and do normal life things that are an important part of me feeling better. I hope everyone understands.”

He went on to apologise to his millions of followers.
